Let Ω\OmegaΩ be a nonempty closed convex subset of a finite-dimensional real inner product space EEE and let f:E→Rf : E \to \mathbb Rf:E→R be continuously differentiable on Ω\OmegaΩ. Then the map

x↦∥∇Ωf(x)∥x \mapsto \|\nabla_\Omega f(x)\|x↦∥∇Ωf(x)∥

is lower semicontinuous on Ω\OmegaΩ: if xk→xx_k \to xxk→x with all xk,x∈Ωx_k, x \in \Omegaxk,x∈Ω, then ∥∇Ωf(x)∥≤lim inf⁡k∥∇Ωf(xk)∥\|\nabla_\Omega f(x)\| \le \liminf_{k} \|\nabla_\Omega f(x_k)\|∥∇Ωf(x)∥≤liminfk∥∇Ωf(xk)∥.

The map need not be continuous: ∇Ωf\nabla_\Omega f∇Ωf can be bounded away from zero near a stationary point. Lower semicontinuity is what transfers ∥∇Ωf(xk)∥→0\|\nabla_\Omega f(x_k)\| \to 0∥∇Ωf(xk)∥→0 to stationarity of limit points.

Formalization Note Lower semicontinuity on Ω\OmegaΩ is Mathlib's LowerSemicontinuousOn, i.e. relative to Ω\OmegaΩ.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
