Let m≥2m\ge 2m≥2 be an integer and let α∈C\alpha\in\mathbb{C}α∈C be nonreal, that is, α≠αˉ\alpha\ne\bar\alphaα=αˉ; no condition on ∣α∣|\alpha|∣α∣ is imposed. Identify the real plane with C\mathbb{C}C through (x,y)↦x+iy(x,y)\mapsto x+iy(x,y)↦x+iy and let

Cm,α={z∈C:Re⁡(zm(∣z∣2+α))=0}.C_{m,\alpha}=\{z\in\mathbb{C} : \operatorname{Re}\bigl(z^m(|z|^2+\alpha)\bigr)=0\}.Cm,α={z∈C:Re(zm(∣z∣2+α))=0}.

A real polynomial f∈R[x,y]f\in\mathbb{R}[x,y]f∈R[x,y] has real zero set Z(f)={z∈C:f(Re⁡z,Im⁡z)=0}Z(f)=\{z\in\mathbb{C} : f(\operatorname{Re}z,\operatorname{Im}z)=0\}Z(f)={z∈C:f(Rez,Imz)=0}, and it is called geometrically irreducible if it is irreducible as an element of C[x,y]\mathbb{C}[x,y]C[x,y].

Then there exists a real polynomial f∈R[x,y]f\in\mathbb{R}[x,y]f∈R[x,y] with

Z(f)=Cm,αZ(f)=C_{m,\alpha}Z(f)=Cm,α

such that:

  1. fff is geometrically irreducible;
  2. fff has total degree m+2m+2m+2;
  3. the set Cm,αC_{m,\alpha}Cm,α is infinite.

This is the opening assertion of Theorem 2 of the note, that Cm,αC_{m,\alpha}Cm,α is an infinite geometrically irreducible curve of degree m+2m+2m+2, including the quartic case m=2m=2m=2. The note states it for ∣α∣=1|\alpha|=1∣α∣=1; here α\alphaα is only assumed to be nonreal. Lemma 4 of the note contains the corresponding irreducibility and infinitude assertions.

Formalization Note: The curve is a subset of C\mathbb{C}C, its degree is the total degree of the real polynomial fff, and geometric irreducibility is irreducibility of the image of fff under R[x,y]→C[x,y]\mathbb{R}[x,y]\to\mathbb{C}[x,y]R[x,y]→C[x,y].

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
