Let KKK be a complete non-archimedean field of characteristic 000 with ∥p∥<1\|p\|<1∥p∥<1 and let log⁡p\log_plogp be the ppp-adic logarithm. For a principal unit x∈Kx\in Kx∈K (∥x−1∥<1\|x-1\|<1∥x−1∥<1),

log⁡px=0  ⟺  xn=1 for some integer n>0.\log_p x=0\iff x^n=1\text{ for some integer }n>0 .logpx=0⟺xn=1 for some integer n>0.

That is, the kernel of log⁡p:U(1)→K\log_p:U^{(1)}\to Klogp:U(1)→K is exactly the group of roots of unity contained in U(1)U^{(1)}U(1) (necessarily of ppp-power order). This is the principal-unit case of Washington, Prop. 5.4, and is the reason the ppp-adic logarithm detects the Zp\mathbb{Z}_pZp-rank of a group of principal units.

Formalization Note Here KKK is any complete, nontrivially normed, ultrametric field of characteristic zero with ∥p∥<1\|p\|<1∥p∥<1 (e.g. a finite extension of Qp\mathbb{Q}_pQp, or a completion KpK_{\mathfrak p}Kp of a number field at p∣p\mathfrak p\mid pp∣p). PadicLog.log is the platform definition from Definitions.Def_PadicLog: log⁡x=lim⁡n(xpn−1)/pn\log x=\lim_{n}(x^{p^n}-1)/p^nlogx=limn(xpn−1)/pn (a limUnder), previously only studied on the ball ∥x−1∥≤∥p∥2\|x-1\|\le\|p\|^2∥x−1∥≤∥p∥2; PadicLog.logSeq x n =(xpn−1)/pn=(x^{p^n}-1)/p^n=(xpn−1)/pn.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
