Let xxx be an optimal solution of the LP relaxation of (10) at u≥0u\ge0u≥0, with at most one fractional product jgj_gjg. Let Sg={j:xj=1}S^g=\{j:x_j=1\}Sg={j:xj=1}. For every feasible integer assortment TTT,

∑j∈Tvij(rij−u)≤2max⁡{∑j∈Sgvij(rij−u), vijg(rijg−u)}.\sum_{j\in T}v_{ij}(r_{ij}-u)\le 2\max\left\{\sum_{j\in S^g}v_{ij}(r_{ij}-u),\ v_{ij_g}(r_{ij_g}-u)\right\}.j∈T∑vij(rij−u)≤2max⎩⎨⎧j∈Sg∑vij(rij−u), vijg(rijg−u)⎭⎬⎫.

If there is no fractional product, the second argument of the maximum is zero. Thus either a rounded LP assortment or a singleton attains a two-approximation.

Formalization Note An optional index records whether the fractional product exists.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
