Scalar Gaussian filter and posterior-form Gaussian variational free energy

Definition
fep2_gaussian_vfe

by ActiveInference · Sep 24, 2026 · Mathlib 0df444a (Lean v4.33.1)

bayesian-filteringfree-energy-principlegaussianvariational-inference

The Gaussian instantiation of the posterior-form variational free energy, self-contained on Mathlib's native real Gaussian laws.

A fixed-variance Gaussian family fixes one strictly positive variance vvv and varies the location: each member is Mathlib's gaussianReal law N(μ,v)\mathcal{N}(\mu, v)N(μ,v) with its canonical density gaussianPDF\mathsf{gaussianPDF}gaussianPDF. Its native KL is exact: for two locations μ1,μ2\mu_1,\mu_2μ1,μ2,

DKL(N(μ1,v) ∥ N(μ2,v))=(μ1−μ2)22v,D_{\mathrm{KL}}\big(\mathcal{N}(\mu_1,v)\,\|\,\mathcal{N}(\mu_2,v)\big) = \frac{(\mu_1-\mu_2)^2}{2v},DKL(N(μ1,v)∥N(μ2,v))=2v(μ1−μ2)2,

proved against Mathlib's log-likelihood-ratio definition of KL with no finiteness hypotheses beyond the fixed positive variance.

A scalar Ornstein–Uhlenbeck parameter block (rate, center, diffusion variance rate) gives the one-step prediction: mean c+e−κτ(m−c)c + e^{-\kappa\tau}(m - c)c+e−κτ(m−c) and variance v e−2κτ+γτv\,e^{-2\kappa\tau} + \gamma\tauve−2κτ+γτ-style closed forms that stay strictly positive. The scalar Gaussian filter then owns prediction, the fixed-noise Gaussian observation kernel, the closed gain, and the closed posterior mean and variance

m∗=mp+K (o−mp),v∗=vp rvp+r,m^* = m_p + K\,(o - m_p), \qquad v^* = \frac{v_p\,r}{v_p + r},m∗=mp+K(o−mp),v∗=vp+rvpr,

with innovation variance vp+rv_p + rvp+r strictly positive — so every posterior remains a nondegenerate family member. The evidence law is the prediction-observation composition, with its candidate Gaussian density at the predicted mean.

The posterior-form Gaussian variational free energy at recognition mean μ\muμ is the native recognition-to-posterior KL

F[m]=DKL(N(m,v∗) ∥ N(m∗,v∗))+S(o),F[m] = D_{\mathrm{KL}}\big(\mathcal{N}(m,v^*)\,\|\,\mathcal{N}(m^*,v^*)\big) + S(o),F[m]=DKL(N(m,v∗)∥N(m∗,v∗))+S(o),

where the evidence surprisal S(o)=−log⁡ρ(o)S(o) = -\log \rho(o)S(o)=−logρ(o) is taken against the candidate evidence density. The recognition family is the fixed-variance family over mmm; zero variances, multivariate laws, and manifold geometry stay outside this definition, and the natural-gradient layer is deliberately not included.

# Gaussian variational free energy (mission substrate)

Mission `Free Energy Principle II` Gaussian substrate, transcribed from the
proved modules `FepSketches.gaussian_information_geometry`,
`FepSketches.scalar_gaussian_semigroup`, `FepSketches.compositions.gaussian_filter`,
and `FepSketches.compositions.smooth_reference_kernel` of the fep_lean
formalization (Active Inference Institute). One nondegenerate scalar Gaussian
location family with fixed variance owns the native Mathlib law, and an exact
scalar Gaussian filter (OU prediction, Gaussian observation, closed update)
owns the posterior mean/variance the recognition family varies over. The
posterior-form Gaussian variational free energy is the native
recognition-to-posterior KL plus the density-relative evidence surprisal; the
mission's theorems derive its mean-square-plus-surprisal form.

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · glm-flash-latest

In namespace FreeEnergyPrinciple, this file defines gaussianVariationalFreeEnergy: a function of a filter model MMM (an Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process with strictly positive mean-reversion rate κ\kappaκ and diffusion-variance rate q˙\dot qq˙, a fixed step duration t≥0t \ge 0t≥0, and observation noise of strictly positive variance vobsv_{\mathrm{obs}}vobs), a prior Gaussian belief bbb (mean mbm_bmb, strictly positive variance vbv_bvb), an observation yyy, and a recognition mean μ\muμ, returning the real number

F(M,b,y,μ)=DKL ⁣(N(μ,s2) ∥ N(m∗,s2))−log⁡φ(y;m^,v),F(M,b,y,\mu)=D_{\mathrm{KL}}\!\left(N(\mu,s^2)\,\middle\|\,N(m_*,s^2)\right)-\log\varphi(y;\hat m,v),F(M,b,y,μ)=DKL(N(μ,s2)N(m∗,s2))−logφ(y;m^,v),

where, with decay d=e−κtd=e^{-\kappa t}d=e−κt: predicted mean m^=c+d(mb−c)\hat m=c+d(m_b-c)m^=c+d(mb−c) (ccc = OU center); predicted variance v^=d2vb+q˙2κ(1−d2)\hat v=d^2 v_b+\tfrac{\dot q}{2\kappa}(1-d^2)v^=d2vb+2κq˙(1−d2); innovation variance v=v^+vobsv=\hat v+v_{\mathrm{obs}}v=v^+vobs; gain g=v^/vg=\hat v/vg=v^/v; posterior mean m∗=m^+g(y−m^)m_*=\hat m+g(y-\hat m)m∗=m^+g(y−m^); posterior variance s2=v^ vobs/vs^2=\hat v\,v_{\mathrm{obs}}/vs2=v^vobs/v; and φ(x;m,v)\varphi(x;m,v)φ(x;m,v) denotes the Gaussian density with mean mmm and variance vvv, so the surprisal term is the negative log-density of N(m^,v)N(\hat m,v)N(m^,v) evaluated at yyy. The KL divergence is oriented from the recognition law N(μ,s2)N(\mu,s^2)N(μ,s2) to the posterior law N(m∗,s2)N(m_*,s^2)N(m∗,s2).

AUDITOR-FLAG: recognition and posterior Gaussians share the same variance s2s^2s2 — the free energy varies only over the recognition mean, never the variance. AUDITOR-FLAG: the surprisal uses a candidate evidence density N(m^,v)N(\hat m,v)N(m^,v); the file separately defines the composed evidence law but proves nothing here identifying the two. AUDITOR-FLAG: the KL is extended-real, coerced via toReal, which sends +∞+\infty+∞ to 000; finiteness holds because the variances are equal but is not asserted by the definition. All denominators are strictly positive by enforced hypotheses (vb,vobs,κ,q˙>0v_b, v_{\mathrm{obs}}, \kappa, \dot q > 0vb,vobs,κ,q˙>0), so no division-by-zero junk arises.

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
