Let (Ω,F,P)(\Omega,\mathcal F,P)(Ω,F,P) be a probability space and let (fn)n≥0(f_n)_{n\ge0}(fn)n≥0 be measurable, nonnegative and integrable with ∫fn dP≤1\int f_n\,dP\le 1∫fndP≤1 for every nnn.

Suppose that for every ε>0\varepsilon>0ε>0 the family can be split, from some index NNN on, into a part bounded in L2L^2L2 and a part small in L1L^1L1: there are NNN, nonnegative measurable families (un)(u_n)(un), (wn)(w_n)(wn) and a constant MMM with un∈L2(P)u_n\in L^2(P)un∈L2(P), wn∈L1(P)w_n\in L^1(P)wn∈L1(P),

fn≤un+wn,∫un2 dP≤M,∫wn dP≤ε(n≥N).f_n\le u_n+w_n,\qquad \int u_n^2\,dP\le M,\qquad \int w_n\,dP\le\varepsilon\qquad (n\ge N).fn≤un+wn,∫un2dP≤M,∫wndP≤ε(n≥N).

Then (fn)(f_n)(fn) is uniformly integrable in L1(P)L^1(P)L1(P).

This is the mechanism behind uniform-integrability proofs for normalized partial sums of dependent sequences: one truncates the summands, controls the truncated sums through a fourth-moment inequality (which gives the L2L^2L2 bound on un=2An2/σn2u_n=2A_n^2/\sigma_n^2un=2An2/σn2), and controls the discarded tail in L1L^1L1. The proof is the two-sided estimate

∫{fn≥C}fn dP ≤ (∫un2 dP)1/2P(fn≥C)1/2+∫wn dP ≤ M/C+ε,\int_{\{f_n\ge C\}} f_n\,dP\ \le\ \Bigl(\int u_n^2\,dP\Bigr)^{1/2}P(f_n\ge C)^{1/2}+\int w_n\,dP\ \le\ \sqrt{M/C}+\varepsilon,∫{fn≥C}fndP ≤ (∫un2dP)1/2P(fn≥C)1/2+∫wndP ≤ M/C+ε,

by Cauchy–Schwarz and Markov's inequality, together with the fact that each of the finitely many remaining members is integrable, so that its own tail integral is small for a large enough threshold.

Standard uniform-integrability criterion (Cauchy--Schwarz plus Markov, in the tail formulation of MeasureTheory.uniformIntegrable_of). It is the abstract form of the argument used for the uniform integrability of S_n^2/sigma_n^2 in P. Doukhan, P. Massart and E. About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
