At the point (0,0)(0,0)(0,0) of w′2=−s(sm+1)(αˉsm+α)w'^2=-s(s^m+1)(\bar\alpha s^m+\alpha)w′2=−s(sm+1)(αˉsm+α), the valuation satisfies v(s)=v(w′)2v(s)=v(w')^2v(s)=v(w′)2

Let m≥1m\ge1m≥1 be an integer and α∈C\alpha\in\mathbb Cα∈C with α≠αˉ\alpha\ne\bar\alphaα=αˉ. Consider the double cover attached to the conjugate parameter: Kαˉ=C(s)[W′]/(W′2−hαˉ(s))K_{\bar\alpha}=\mathbb C(s)[W']/(W'^2-h_{\bar\alpha}(s))Kαˉ=C(s)[W′]/(W′2−hαˉ(s)), where hαˉ(s)=−s(sm+1)(αˉsm+α)h_{\bar\alpha}(s)=-s(s^m+1)(\bar\alpha s^m+\alpha)hαˉ(s)=−s(sm+1)(αˉsm+α), with w′w'w′ the class of W′W'W′, so that w′2=hαˉ(s)w'^2=h_{\bar\alpha}(s)w′2=hαˉ(s). Since hαˉ(0)=0h_{\bar\alpha}(0)=0hαˉ(0)=0, the point (0,0)(0,0)(0,0) lies on the affine curve w′2=hαˉ(s)w'^2=h_{\bar\alpha}(s)w′2=hαˉ(s). Its local ring O(0,0)′⊂Kαˉ\mathcal O'_{(0,0)}\subset K_{\bar\alpha}O(0,0)′⊂Kαˉ, the localization of C[s][W′]/(W′2−hαˉ)\mathbb C[s][W']/(W'^2-h_{\bar\alpha})C[s][W′]/(W′2−hαˉ) at the maximal ideal of (0,0)(0,0)(0,0), is a valuation ring of KαˉK_{\bar\alpha}Kαˉ; let vvv be its valuation.

Then

v(s)=v(w′)2.v(s)=v(w')^{2}.v(s)=v(w′)2.

The function field Kα=C(t)[W]/(W2−hα(t))K_\alpha=\mathbb C(t)[W]/(W^2-h_\alpha(t))Kα=C(t)[W]/(W2−hα(t)) of the family's double cover, with hα(t)=−t(tm+1)(αtm+αˉ)h_\alpha(t)=-t(t^m+1)(\alpha t^m+\bar\alpha)hα(t)=−t(tm+1)(αtm+αˉ) and w2=hα(t)w^2=h_\alpha(t)w2=hα(t), is identified with KαˉK_{\bar\alpha}Kαˉ by t=1/st=1/st=1/s, w=w′ s−(m+1)w=w'\,s^{-(m+1)}w=w′s−(m+1), and its place over t=∞t=\inftyt=∞ is the preimage of O(0,0)′\mathcal O'_{(0,0)}O(0,0)′. The identity is used in the comparison of valuations at that place which shows that every holomorphic f dtf\,dtfdt on KαK_\alphaKα equals a(t) dt/wa(t)\,dt/wa(t)dt/w with deg⁡a<m\deg a<mdega<m, a step of the genus computation in Lemma 4.

Formalization Note: vvv is Mathlib's valuation of the valuation subring, written multiplicatively with values in its value group, so that v(ξ)≤1v(\xi)\le1v(ξ)≤1 exactly for ξ\xiξ in the ring. In additive notation the statement says that sss vanishes at (0,0)(0,0)(0,0) to twice the order of w′w'w′. The hypotheses m>0m>0m>0 and α≠αˉ\alpha\ne\bar\alphaα=αˉ are Fact instances.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
