Let 1≤r≤k1\le r\le k1≤r≤k be integers and let GGG be an r×kr\times kr×k random matrix with independent standard normal entries, so that W=GG⊤W=GG^\topW=GG⊤ is a real Wishart matrix Wr(k,I)W_r(k,I)Wr(k,I). Write

λmin⁡(GG⊤)=σmin⁡(G⊤)2,σmin⁡(G⊤)=inf⁡x∈Rr, ∥x∥2=1∥G⊤x∥2,\lambda_{\min}(GG^\top)=\sigma_{\min}(G^\top)^2,\qquad \sigma_{\min}(G^\top)=\inf_{x\in\mathbb R^r,\ \|x\|_2=1}\|G^\top x\|_2 ,λmin(GG⊤)=σmin(G⊤)2,σmin(G⊤)=x∈Rr, ∥x∥2=1inf∥G⊤x∥2,

and put

cr,k=2(k−r−1)/2 Γ ⁣(k+12)Γ ⁣(r2) Γ(k−r+1).c_{r,k}=\frac{2^{(k-r-1)/2}\,\Gamma\!\big(\frac{k+1}{2}\big)}{\Gamma\!\big(\frac r2\big)\,\Gamma(k-r+1)}.cr,k=Γ(2r)Γ(k−r+1)2(k−r−1)/2Γ(2k+1).

Then for every t>0t>0t>0,

P{λmin⁡(GG⊤)≤t}  ≤  ∫0tcr,k λ(k−r−1)/2e−λ/2 dλ.\mathbb P\big\{\lambda_{\min}(GG^\top)\le t\big\}\;\le\;\int_0^t c_{r,k}\,\lambda^{(k-r-1)/2}e^{-\lambda/2}\,d\lambda .P{λmin(GG⊤)≤t}≤∫0tcr,kλ(k−r−1)/2e−λ/2dλ.

This is the integrated form of Edelman's pointwise density bound fλmin⁡(λ)≤cr,kλ(k−r−1)/2e−λ/2f_{\lambda_{\min}}(\lambda)\le c_{r,k}\lambda^{(k-r-1)/2}e^{-\lambda/2}fλmin(λ)≤cr,kλ(k−r−1)/2e−λ/2 for λ>0\lambda>0λ>0 (Tropp–Webber eq. (B.5)). Edelman's derivation starts from the joint eigenvalue density of WWW, ∝∏iλi(k−r−1)/2e−λi/2∏i<j∣λi−λj∣\propto\prod_i\lambda_i^{(k-r-1)/2}e^{-\lambda_i/2}\prod_{i<j}|\lambda_i-\lambda_j|∝∏iλi(k−r−1)/2e−λi/2∏i<j∣λi−λj∣. It writes fλmin⁡(λ)=λ(k−r−1)/2e−λ/2 h(λ)f_{\lambda_{\min}}(\lambda)=\lambda^{(k-r-1)/2}e^{-\lambda/2}\,h(\lambda)fλmin(λ)=λ(k−r−1)/2e−λ/2h(λ), where hhh is nonincreasing, and bounds h(λ)≤h(0+)=cr,kh(\lambda)\le h(0^+)=c_{r,k}h(λ)≤h(0+)=cr,k. The bound is therefore sharp as λ→0+\lambda\to0^+λ→0+, and for r=1r=1r=1 it is an equality: c1,kλk/2−1e−λ/2c_{1,k}\lambda^{k/2-1}e^{-\lambda/2}c1,kλk/2−1e−λ/2 is exactly the χk2\chi^2_kχk2 density. Combined with tw_gamma_ratio_bound and integral_power_exp_le, it gives the lower-tail bound wishart_lambda_min_tail (TW (B.7)). That bound in turn gives the tail and moment bounds for ∥G†∥\|G^\dagger\|∥G†∥ and ∥(GG⊤)−1∥\|(GG^\top)^{-1}\|∥(GG⊤)−1∥.

Formalization Note. The law of GGG is gaussianMatrix r k on Fin r → Fin k → ℝ, and λmin⁡(GG⊤)\lambda_{\min}(GG^\top)λmin(GG⊤) is written sMin (Matrix.of G)ᵀ ^ 2, so no eigenvalues need to be defined. The right-hand side is a lower Lebesgue integral (lintegral) over (0,t](0,t](0,t] of ENNReal.ofReal of the density bound. The integrand is integrable, since (k−r−1)/2≥−12>−1(k-r-1)/2\ge-\tfrac12>-1(k−r−1)/2≥−21>−1, and the lintegral form avoids Bochner-integral junk values. Γ\GammaΓ is Real.Gamma, and the powers are real powers, positive on (0,t](0,t](0,t]. The hypothesis r≥1r\ge1r≥1 is necessary: for r=0r=0r=0, Real.Gamma 0 = 0 makes c0,k=0c_{0,k}=0c0,k=0, while the event is the whole space. Only the interval form is stated, because it is all that (B.7) needs; it is weaker than the pointwise density bound.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
