Write λ\lambdaλ for Lebesgue measure on R\mathbb{R}R, and call R⊆RR\subseteq\mathbb{R}R⊆R 1-periodic if x+1∈R  ⟺  x∈Rx+1\in R\iff x\in Rx+1∈R⟺x∈R for all x∈Rx\in\mathbb{R}x∈R.

Theorem. Let R⊆RR\subseteq\mathbb{R}R⊆R be closed and 1-periodic, and let ε>0\varepsilon>0ε>0. Then there is an open, 1-periodic set V⊆RV\subseteq\mathbb{R}V⊆R with R⊆VR\subseteq VR⊆V and

λ(V∩[0,1])≤λ(R∩[0,1])+ε.\lambda\bigl(V\cap[0,1]\bigr)\le\lambda\bigl(R\cap[0,1]\bigr)+\varepsilon .λ(V∩[0,1])≤λ(R∩[0,1])+ε.

This is a periodic form of outer regularity: a closed periodic set can be enlarged to an open periodic set at arbitrarily small extra cost in measure per period. It is used to cover the exceptional centers of a random construction by an open periodic set before adding them to the hitting set.

Formalization Note Measures are extended nonnegative reals, and ε\varepsilonε enters as ENNReal.ofReal ε.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
