This technical lemma concerns a convex function u:Rn→Ru:\mathbb R^n\to\mathbb Ru:Rn→R and a test function ψ\psiψ. If uuu is convex, ψ∈C2\psi\in C^2ψ∈C2 at x0x_0x0, u(x0)=ψ(x0)u(x_0)=\psi(x_0)u(x0)=ψ(x0), and u≤ψu\le\psiu≤ψ almost everywhere in a neighborhood of x0x_0x0, then every direction v∈Rnv\in\mathbb R^nv∈Rn satisfies

0≤D2ψ(x0)[v,v].0\le D^2\psi(x_0)[v,v].0≤D2ψ(x0)[v,v].

The result is a one-dimensional directional form of the positive-semidefinite Hessian conclusion used by the public touching lemma.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
