Fix the competition intensity 0<γC<10<\gamma_C<10<γC<1, the signal accuracy t>0t>0t>0 and the prior variance σ2>0\sigma^2>0σ2>0. There exist thresholds kCN<kCSk^N_C<k^S_CkCN<kCS with

12<kCN<kCS<3+54\tfrac12<k^N_C<k^S_C<\tfrac{3+\sqrt5}{4}21<kCN<kCS<43+5

such that, for all a,c,ka,c,ka,c,k satisfying the standing assumptions 0<c<a0<c<a0<c<a, k>a/(4c)k>a/(4c)k>a/(4c), k>1/3k>1/3k>1/3, the set E\mathcal EE of pure-strategy equilibria of the stage-one information-sharing game between the two manufacturers (Table 1) is:

  1. if k<kCNk<k^N_Ck<kCN: E={(S,S)}\mathcal E=\{(S,S)\}E={(S,S)};
  2. if kCN<k<kCSk^N_C<k<k^S_CkCN<k<kCS: E={(S,S),(N,N)}\mathcal E=\{(S,S),(N,N)\}E={(S,S),(N,N)}, and each manufacturer's payoff at (S,S)(S,S)(S,S) is strictly larger than at (N,N)(N,N)(N,N);
  3. if k>kCSk>k^S_Ck>kCS: E={(N,N)}\mathcal E=\{(N,N)\}E={(N,N)}.

Here manufacturer iii chooses whether chain iii shares (SSS) or not (NNN), pays the retailer the side payment m^\hat mm^ needed to induce sharing, and earns ΠMi,CSXj−m^Xj\Pi^{SX_j}_{M_i,C}-\hat m^{X_j}ΠMi,CSXj−m^Xj if it shares and ΠMi,CNXj\Pi^{NX_j}_{M_i,C}ΠMi,CNXj otherwise.

This is the main result of the Cournot half of the paper: information sharing is the unique outcome when cost reduction is efficient, a coordination problem with a Pareto-better sharing equilibrium at intermediate efficiency, and absent when cost reduction is inefficient.

Formalization Note The thresholds depend only on (γC,t,σ2)(\gamma_C,t,\sigma^2)(γC,t,σ2) and are chosen before a,c,ka,c,ka,c,k; their bounds are those of Proposition 6(a)(2), and they make all three cases nonempty. The page's "otherwise" is stated as k>kCSk>k^S_Ck>kCS: at k=kCNk=k^N_Ck=kCN and k=kCSk=k^S_Ck=kCS both (S,S)(S,S)(S,S) and (N,N)(N,N)(N,N) are equilibria, so the boundary points are left out. Only pure-strategy equilibria are counted, as in the paper (the middle region also has a mixed equilibrium). "Pareto optimal" is the strict inequality of the payoffs at (S,S)(S,S)(S,S) over (N,N)(N,N)(N,N), stated for manufacturer 1; by symmetry it is the same for manufacturer 2. The hypothesis γC>0\gamma_C>0γC>0 is added (at γC=0\gamma_C=0γC=0 the middle region is empty).

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
