Let X1,…,XNX_1,\dots,X_NX1,…,XN be independent random variables on a probability space, each taking values in [0,1][0,1][0,1], let X=X1+⋯+XNX=X_1+\dots+X_NX=X1+⋯+XN and μ=E[X]\mu=E[X]μ=E[X]. Then for every α>0\alpha>0α>0,

Pr⁡[∣X−μ∣≥α]≤μα2.\Pr\big[|X-\mu|\ge\alpha\big]\le\frac{\mu}{\alpha^2}.Pr[∣X−μ∣≥α]≤α2μ.

The paper uses this corollary of Chebyshev's inequality to show that the welfare of the rounded preallocation is unlikely to fall below a third of its expectation OPT∗OPT^*OPT∗.

Formalization Note The variables are real-valued, measurable, independent in the sense of Mathlib's iIndepFun, and take values in [0,1][0,1][0,1] at every sample point; the number NNN of variables is arbitrary. Expectation is the Bochner integral, which is the true expectation here because XXX is bounded and measurable.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
