Let c,p∈R2c,p\in\mathbb R^2c,p∈R2, let q0,q1,q2∈R2q_0,q_1,q_2\in\mathbb R^2q0,q1,q2∈R2, and let ρ,x,σ,κ,γ,t\rho,x,\sigma,\kappa,\gamma,tρ,x,σ,κ,γ,t be real numbers such that

  1. ρ>0\rho>0ρ>0, σ>0\sigma>0σ>0, σ2≤1−x\sigma^2\le 1-xσ2≤1−x, κ>0\kappa>0κ>0, γ≥0\gamma\ge 0γ≥0 and γ2<1\gamma^2<1γ2<1;
  2. 1≤2σγκ1\le 2\sigma\gamma\kappa1≤2σγκ, 3≤4γ2σ23\le 4\gamma^2\sigma^23≤4γ2σ2, κ2x+1≤2γκ\kappa^2x+1\le 2\gamma\kappaκ2x+1≤2γκ and (3+x)2≤12γ2(3+x)^2\le 12\gamma^2(3+x)2≤12γ2;
  3. 4κ2x2≤t4\kappa^2x^2\le t4κ2x2≤t and x2≤4σ2(1−γ2) tx^2\le 4\sigma^2(1-\gamma^2)\,tx2≤4σ2(1−γ2)t.

Assume that p,q0,q1,q2p,q_0,q_1,q_2p,q0,q1,q2 lie in the closed annulus

ρ2(1−x)≤∣z−c∣2≤ρ2,\rho^2(1-x)\le |z-c|^2\le \rho^2 ,ρ2(1−x)≤∣z−c∣2≤ρ2,

that q0,q1,q2q_0,q_1,q_2q0,q1,q2 are equidistant from ppp, that is ∣p−qi∣=∣p−qj∣|p-q_i|=|p-q_j|∣p−qi∣=∣p−qj∣ for all i,ji,ji,j, and that ∣p−qi∣2≤3ρ2|p-q_i|^2\le 3\rho^2∣p−qi∣2≤3ρ2. Then there are indices i≠ji\ne ji=j with

∣qi−qj∣2≤t ρ2.|q_i-q_j|^2\le t\,\rho^2 .∣qi−qj∣2≤tρ2.

The points qiq_iqi need not be distinct.

This is a scale-free close-pair statement for three points of a thin annulus on a circle of radius at most 3 ρ\sqrt3\,\rho3ρ about a point of the annulus. All parameter conditions are polynomial inequalities, so for rational parameters they can be checked by exact arithmetic. With ccc the centroid of a point configuration and ρ\rhoρ its outer radius, it gives close pairs among configuration points that lie on a common circle about another configuration point.

Formalization Note Points are elements of EuclideanSpace ℝ (Fin 2), the triple is a function Fin 3 → ℝ², and all thresholds are stated for squared distances.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
