Let G=(V,E)G=(V,E)G=(V,E) be a finite simple graph with node capacities bbb and edge bounds ddd, let x∈REx\in\mathbb{R}^Ex∈RE be any point, and let s=b−Axs=b-Axs=b−Ax and t=d−xt=d-xt=d−x be the slack vectors of the constraints Ax≤bAx\le bAx≤b and x≤dx\le dx≤d. For every W⊆VW\subseteq VW⊆V and every T⊆(W:V−W)T\subseteq (W:V-W)T⊆(W:V−W),

2x(W)+x(W:V−W)+x(T)+s(W)+t(T)=b(W)+d(T),2x(W)+x(W:V-W)+x(T)+s(W)+t(T)=b(W)+d(T),2x(W)+x(W:V−W)+x(T)+s(W)+t(T)=b(W)+d(T),

where x(W)=∑e∈E(W)xex(W)=\sum_{e\in E(W)}x_ex(W)=∑e∈E(W)xe, x(W:V−W)=∑e∈(W:V−W)xex(W:V-W)=\sum_{e\in(W:V-W)}x_ex(W:V−W)=∑e∈(W:V−W)xe, x(T)=∑e∈Txex(T)=\sum_{e\in T}x_ex(T)=∑e∈Txe, s(W)=∑i∈Wsis(W)=\sum_{i\in W}s_is(W)=∑i∈Wsi and t(T)=∑e∈T(de−xe)t(T)=\sum_{e\in T}(d_e-x_e)t(T)=∑e∈T(de−xe).

The identity is obtained by adding the rows of Ax+s=bAx+s=bAx+s=b indexed by WWW and the rows of x+t=dx+t=dx+t=d indexed by TTT. It is what turns the blossom inequality (3.3) into a cut condition.

Formalization Note The identity is stated for an arbitrary real vector xxx; neither feasibility nor positivity of b,db,db,d is needed.

/-- Padberg–Rao (1982), p. 75, Eq. (3.6): adding the rows of `Ax + s = b` with index in `W`
and the rows of `x + t = d` with index in `T ⊆ (W : V − W)` gives
`2x(W) + x(W : V − W) + x(T) + s(W) + t(T) = b(W) + d(T)`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
