Let QQQ and EEE be finite sets with operations ⋄Q\diamond_Q⋄Q and ⋄E\diamond_E⋄E, and let ⋄\diamond⋄ be an operation on Q×EQ\times EQ×E. The block (x,y)(x,y)(x,y) is the part of the table of ⋄\diamond⋄ with rows in {x}×E\{x\}\times E{x}×E and columns in {y}×E\{y\}\times E{y}×E. It is twisted when there are automorphisms φx,y,ψx,y\varphi_{x,y},\psi_{x,y}φx,y,ψx,y of (E,⋄E)(E,\diamond_E)(E,⋄E) with

(x,s)⋄(y,t)=(x⋄Qy,  φx,y(s)⋄Eψx,y(t))for all s,t∈E.(x,s)\diamond(y,t)=(x\diamond_Q y,\;\varphi_{x,y}(s)\diamond_E\psi_{x,y}(t))\quad\text{for all } s,t\in E.(x,s)⋄(y,t)=(x⋄Qy,φx,y(s)⋄Eψx,y(t))for all s,t∈E.

The fibre (E,⋄E)(E,\diamond_E)(E,⋄E) satisfies condition (R) when, for all automorphisms α,a,b,c\alpha,a,b,cα,a,b,c of (E,⋄E)(E,\diamond_E)(E,⋄E) with

s=t⋄E(α(s)⋄E((a(t)⋄Eb(s))⋄Ec(t)))for all s,t∈E,s=t\diamond_E\bigl(\alpha(s)\diamond_E((a(t)\diamond_E b(s))\diamond_E c(t))\bigr)\quad\text{for all } s,t\in E,s=t⋄E(α(s)⋄E((a(t)⋄Eb(s))⋄Ec(t)))for all s,t∈E,

the equation r⋄Eb(s)=a(s)r\diamond_E b(s)=a(s)r⋄Eb(s)=a(s) has a solution r∈Er\in Er∈E for every s∈Es\in Es∈E. (For α=a=b=c=id\alpha=a=b=c=\mathrm{id}α=a=b=c=id this identity is E677 for ⋄E\diamond_E⋄E.)

Theorem. Suppose that

  1. (Q×E,⋄)(Q\times E,\diamond)(Q×E,⋄) satisfies E677, and (Q,⋄Q)(Q,\diamond_Q)(Q,⋄Q) satisfies E255;
  2. every block is twisted, except that the blocks (e,e)(e,e)(e,e) with e⋄Qe=ee\diamond_Q e=ee⋄Qe=e (the idempotent diagonal blocks) may have any table;
  3. E255 holds at every point (e,s)(e,s)(e,s) with e⋄Qe=ee\diamond_Q e=ee⋄Qe=e;
  4. (E,⋄E)(E,\diamond_E)(E,⋄E) satisfies (R).

Then (Q×E,⋄)(Q\times E,\diamond)(Q×E,⋄) satisfies E255. E677 is not assumed for ⋄Q\diamond_Q⋄Q or for ⋄E\diamond_E⋄E.

Which fibres satisfy (R). By Counterexample structure (o), (R) holds when EEE is rigid and satisfies E255, and when EEE is right-cancellative (see (o) for the terms). Counterexample structure (p) treats a right-cancellative fibre with permutations in place of automorphisms.

Use in a counterexample search. Let θ\thetaθ be a congruence of a minimum counterexample MMM that is neither equality nor universal. All θ\thetaθ-classes have the same size (as used in Counterexample structure (b)), so MMM can be written as Q×EQ\times EQ×E with Q=M/θQ=M/\thetaQ=M/θ. By minimality, QQQ satisfies E255, and so does each class over an idempotent of QQQ (a smaller submagma). So hypotheses 1 and 3 hold, and the blocks of MMM off the idempotent diagonal blocks are not all twisted for one fibre operation with (R).

Prior work. ETP blueprint Lemma 13.4 proves E255 for the affine extensions (x,s)⋄(y,t)=(x⋄y,αx,ys+βx,yt+cx,y)(x,s)\diamond(y,t)=(x\diamond y,\alpha_{x,y}s+\beta_{x,y}t+c_{x,y})(x,s)⋄(y,t)=(x⋄y,αx,ys+βx,yt+cx,y) over an abelian group, with endomorphisms αx,y,βx,y\alpha_{x,y},\beta_{x,y}αx,y,βx,y. The twisted form has a magma in place of the abelian group, automorphisms in place of the endomorphisms, and no constant term. The twisted construction is B. Le Floch's (ETP Zulip thread "FINITE: 677 -> 255", 2024-12-18): (x,s)⋄(y,t)=(x⋄y,Sx,y(s)⋄Tx,y(t))(x,s)\diamond(y,t)=(x\diamond y,S_{x,y}(s)\diamond T_{x,y}(t))(x,s)⋄(y,t)=(x⋄y,Sx,y(s)⋄Tx,y(t)) with endomorphisms Sx,y,Tx,yS_{x,y},T_{x,y}Sx,y,Tx,y of the fibre, Tx,yT_{x,y}Tx,y bijective; here both twists are bijective. The same day he gave an informal argument that it gives no finite counterexample, and then noted: "If M is not right-invertible to begin with ..., then the result is not right-invertible. And maybe ∀x,∃y,yx=x\forall x,\exists y,yx=x∀x,∃y,yx=x is not preserved by this construction: even invertible twists might 'move' the failures of right-invertibility from some im(Rx)\mathrm{im}(R_x)im(Rx) that contains xxx to one that does not." For automorphisms α,a,b,c\alpha,a,b,cα,a,b,c as in (R), put γ=a−1∘b\gamma=a^{-1}\circ bγ=a−1∘b; then (R) for them says that each s∈Es\in Es∈E is r⋄Eγ(s)r\diamond_E\gamma(s)r⋄Eγ(s) for some r∈Er\in Er∈E. By the theorem, under hypotheses 1–4 every point of Q×EQ\times EQ×E has a fixer, so the loss of fixers that his second sentence considers does not occur. On 2024-12-25 he wrote: "If the base 677 magma is right-cancellative then the resulting magma is right-cancellative, but there was no direct immunity to 677->255, so there is still a bit of hope there." This theorem adds a Lean proof, arbitrary idempotent diagonal blocks, and condition (R), which does not require right cancellation and holds for the rigid fibres with E255 of (o). The formal condition (R), and the proof that it gives E255, were not found in the ETP blueprint, the ETP paper (arXiv:2512.07087v2) or the ETP Zulip thread up to 2026-10-14.

Formalization Note The operations are opQ, opE and op on Q × E. The twists are maps φ ψ : Q → Q → Equiv.Perm E, and hφ, hψ say that they respect opE. htw says that every block (x, y) with ¬ (x = y ∧ opQ x x = x) is twisted. hidem is hypothesis 3, and hR is (R) with the automorphism property written out. The theorem is about the product type; a magma that is only isomorphic to a product needs a transport step that is not part of this statement.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
