Let A,B∈RN×nA, B \in \mathbb{R}^{N\times n}A,B∈RN×n, let ∥M∥=sup⁡∥x∥2=1∥Mx∥2\|M\| = \sup_{\|x\|_2 = 1}\|Mx\|_2∥M∥=sup∥x∥2=1∥Mx∥2 denote the spectral (ℓ2→ℓ2\ell_2\to\ell_2ℓ2→ℓ2 operator) norm, i.e. the largest singular value, and let ∥M∥F=(∑i,jMij2)1/2\|M\|_F = \big(\sum_{i,j} M_{ij}^2\big)^{1/2}∥M∥F=(∑i,jMij2)1/2 denote the Frobenius norm. Then

∣ ∥A∥−∥B∥ ∣  ≤  ∥A−B∥F.\big|\,\|A\| - \|B\|\,\big| \;\le\; \|A - B\|_F .∥A∥−∥B∥≤∥A−B∥F.

It follows from the reverse triangle inequality for the operator norm together with the comparison ∥M∥≤∥M∥F\|M\| \le \|M\|_F∥M∥≤∥M∥F (a consequence of the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality applied row by row). Its role is to make Gaussian concentration applicable to the largest singular value of a Gaussian matrix, giving P{∥G∥≥N+n+t}≤e−t2/2\mathbb{P}\{\|G\| \ge \sqrt N + \sqrt n + t\} \le e^{-t^2/2}P{∥G∥≥N+n+t}≤e−t2/2 when combined with Gordon's bound E∥G∥≤N+n\mathbb{E}\|G\| \le \sqrt N + \sqrt nE∥G∥≤N+n.

Formalization Note. specNorm is Mathlib's Matrix.Norms.L2Operator norm and frobNorm A is ∑i,jAij2\sqrt{\sum_{i,j} A_{ij}^2}∑i,jAij2. The statement holds for all dimensions, including N=0N = 0N=0 or n=0n = 0n=0.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
