A fourth-root improvement for planar distinct distances

For a finite set P⊂R2P\subset\mathbb R^2P⊂R2, let

D(P)=∣{ ∥x−y∥:x,y∈P, x≠y }∣D(P)=\bigl|\{\,\|x-y\|:x,y\in P,\ x\ne y\,\}\bigr|D(P)={∥x−y∥:x,y∈P, x=y}

be the number of distinct positive distances determined by PPP.

There exist a real constant c>0c>0c>0 and an integer n0n_0n0 such that every finite set P⊂R2P\subset\mathbb R^2P⊂R2 with n=∣P∣≥n0n=|P|\ge n_0n=∣P∣≥n0, no three collinear points, and no four cocircular points satisfies

D(P)≥n3+c n1/4.D(P)\ge \frac n3+c\,n^{1/4}.D(P)≥3n+cn1/4.

The constant and threshold are uniform over all such point sets.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
