In the chart x=1/sx=1/sx=1/s, y=r/sy=r/sy=r/s the quartic x4+y4=2x^4+y^4=2x4+y4=2 becomes r4=2s4−1r^4=2s^4-1r4=2s4−1. Let R′=C[s][T]/(T4−(2s4−1))R'=\mathbb C[s][T]/(T^4-(2s^4-1))R′=C[s][T]/(T4−(2s4−1)) and K′=C(s)[T]/(T4−(2s4−1))K'=\mathbb C(s)[T]/(T^4-(2s^4-1))K′=C(s)[T]/(T4−(2s4−1)) be the affine coordinate ring and the function field of this chart, with rrr the class of TTT. Fix ζ∈C\zeta\in\mathbb Cζ∈C with ζ4=−1\zeta^4=-1ζ4=−1, so that (0,ζ)(0,\zeta)(0,ζ) is a point of r4=2s4−1r^4=2s^4-1r4=2s4−1, and let O′⊆K′\mathcal O'\subseteq K'O′⊆K′ be the local ring there: the localization of R′R'R′ at the kernel of the evaluation s↦0s\mapsto0s↦0, T↦ζT\mapsto\zetaT↦ζ, viewed inside K′K'K′.

Then the inverse of the coordinate sss does not lie in this local ring:

s−1∉O′.s^{-1}\notin\mathcal O'.s−1∈/O′.

Since sss itself lies in O′\mathcal O'O′, this says that sss is not a unit of O′\mathcal O'O′.

It is used to show that the corresponding place of the function field of the quartic, where xxx corresponds to 1/s1/s1/s, lies over x=∞x=\inftyx=∞, and in the degree bound for holomorphic differentials at that place; both are steps of the computation of the genus three in Remark 5 of the note.

Formalization Note: ζ\zetaζ is one fourth root of −1-1−1, selected by choice, and the statement concerns that root.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
