This is a partial formalization of the Hessian coercivity statement associated with Lemma 2.4 of Letwin (arXiv:2607.24164v1).

Let n∈Nn\in\mathbb Nn∈N and let u,V:EuclideanSpace⁡(R,Fin⁡(n))→Ru,V:\operatorname{EuclideanSpace}(\mathbb R,\operatorname{Fin}(n))\to\mathbb Ru,V:EuclideanSpace(R,Fin(n))→R. Assume:

  1. uuu is C1C^1C1 and ∇u\nabla u∇u is Lipschitz.
  2. VVV is differentiable and convex on the whole space.
  3. For almost every xxx, with H(x)=hessianMatrix⁡(u,x)H(x)=\operatorname{hessianMatrix}(u,x)H(x)=hessianMatrix(u,x), H(x)H(x)H(x) is positive definite,
log⁡det⁡H(x)=−u(x)+V(∇u(x)),\log\det H(x)=-u(x)+V(\nabla u(x)),logdetH(x)=−u(x)+V(∇u(x)),

and KI−H(x)K I-H(x)KI−H(x) is positive semidefinite.

For every increment hhh, for almost every xxx,

∥H(x+h)−H(x)∥F2+∥H(x−h)−H(x)∥F22K2≤tr⁡ ⁣(H(x)−1Hw(x))−DV(∇u(x))(∇w(x))+w(x),\frac{\|H(x+h)-H(x)\|_F^2+\|H(x-h)-H(x)\|_F^2}{2K^2} \le \operatorname{tr}\!\left(H(x)^{-1}H_w(x)\right) -DV(\nabla u(x))(\nabla w(x))+w(x),2K2∥H(x+h)−H(x)∥F2+∥H(x−h)−H(x)∥F2≤tr(H(x)−1Hw(x))−DV(∇u(x))(∇w(x))+w(x),

where w(y)=u(y+h)+u(y−h)−2u(y)w(y)=u(y+h)+u(y-h)-2u(y)w(y)=u(y+h)+u(y−h)−2u(y) and Hw=hessianMatrix⁡(w,⋅)H_w=\operatorname{hessianMatrix}(w,\cdot)Hw=hessianMatrix(w,⋅). The almost-everywhere qualifier is with respect to Lebesgue measure, and no positivity of KKK is separately assumed.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
