Let vvv be a normalized, complement-free valuation, let σ=(S1,…,Sn)\sigma=(S_1,\dots,S_n)σ=(S1,…,Sn) be a preallocation in which every item appears in at most kkk bundles, and let SirS_i^rSir be the layers of step (ii). Then for every bidder iii,

v(Si)≤∑r=1kv(Sir).v(S_i)\le\sum_{r=1}^{k} v(S_i^r).v(Si)≤r=1∑kv(Sir).

This is where complement freeness enters the proof of Theorem 3.1: since Si=⋃rSirS_i=\bigcup_r S_i^rSi=⋃rSir, subadditivity bounds the value of the whole bundle by the sum of the values of its layers.

Formalization Note Normalization v(∅)=0v(\emptyset)=0v(∅)=0 is used because some layers may be empty (and for k=0k=0k=0, where Si=∅S_i=\emptysetSi=∅).

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
