Equation (5): a rotation of order N>dN>dN>d forces N=2mN=2mN=2m and P=XmA(XY)+YmAˉ(XY)P=X^mA(XY)+Y^m\bar A(XY)P=XmA(XY)+YmAˉ(XY) with AAA nonconstant

Let f∈R[x,y]f\in\mathbb R[x,y]f∈R[x,y] be a polynomial that is irreducible in C[x,y]\mathbb C[x,y]C[x,y], of total degree d≥2d\ge 2d≥2, and let C={z∈C: f(Re⁡z,Im⁡z)=0}C=\{z\in\mathbb C:\ f(\operatorname{Re}z,\operatorname{Im}z)=0\}C={z∈C: f(Rez,Imz)=0} be its real zero set. Assume that CCC is infinite and is not a circle: C≠{z∈C: ∣z−c∣=R}C\ne\{z\in\mathbb C:\ |z-c|=R\}C={z∈C: ∣z−c∣=R} for all c∈Cc\in\mathbb Cc∈C and all real R>0R>0R>0. Let P(X,Y)=f((X+Y)/2,(X−Y)/(2i))∈C[X,Y]P(X,Y)=f\big((X+Y)/2,(X-Y)/(2i)\big)\in\mathbb C[X,Y]P(X,Y)=f((X+Y)/2,(X−Y)/(2i))∈C[X,Y] be fff written in the coordinates X=zX=zX=z, Y=zˉY=\bar zY=zˉ. Finally, let NNN be a natural number with N>dN>dN>d, and let ζ∈C\zeta\in\mathbb Cζ∈C be a primitive NNN-th root of unity such that the rotation z↦ζzz\mapsto\zeta zz↦ζz maps CCC into itself.

Then there are a natural number mmm and a polynomial A∈C[s]A\in\mathbb C[s]A∈C[s] such that

P(X,Y)=Xm A(XY)+Ym A‾(XY),P(X,Y)=X^m\,A(XY)+Y^m\,\overline{A}(XY),P(X,Y)=XmA(XY)+YmA(XY),

where A‾\overline{A}A is obtained from AAA by conjugating its coefficients, and moreover:

  1. N=2mN=2mN=2m;
  2. P(ζX,ζ−1Y)=−P(X,Y)P(\zeta X,\zeta^{-1}Y)=-P(X,Y)P(ζX,ζ−1Y)=−P(X,Y);
  3. 1≤deg⁡A≤⌊(d−m)/2⌋1\le\deg A\le\lfloor (d-m)/2\rfloor1≤degA≤⌊(d−m)/2⌋;
  4. m+2≤dm+2\le dm+2≤d.

This is equation (5) of the note, in the case of the proof of Theorem 1 where the rotation group has order N>dN>dN>d (after the center of rotation has been moved to the origin): the order is even, the sign in equation (4) is −1-1−1, and PPP has the radial form (5) with AAA nonconstant. The inequality m≤d−2m\le d-2m≤d−2 then gives N≤2d−4N\le 2d-4N≤2d−4.

Formalization Note: the curve CCC is a subset of C\mathbb CC, and the rotation is only assumed to map CCC into CCC, not onto it.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
