This identifies the effect of subtracting an affine function on subgradient images.

Let EEE be a real inner-product space, let u:E→Ru:E\to\mathbb Ru:E→R, p∈Ep\in Ep∈E, c∈Rc\in\mathbb Rc∈R, and G⊆EG\subseteq EG⊆E. Then, using subgradientImage,

∂(u−⟨p,⋅⟩−c)(G)={q−p:q∈∂u(G)}.\partial\bigl(u-\langle p,\cdot\rangle-c\bigr)(G)=\{q-p:q\in\partial u(G)\}.∂(u−⟨p,⋅⟩−c)(G)={q−p:q∈∂u(G)}.

Equivalently, the subgradient image is translated by −p-p−p.

This is a bookkeeping identity used to transfer volume estimates under affine normalization.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
