Lemma 47, p. 38 — concretization L is left adjoint to the inclusion R
ProvedConcreteSheaves.Quasitopos.lemma_47Let be a small category with a coverage and a terminal object (written in the paper), and suppose is a concrete site: representables are sheaves, is faithful, and covering families are jointly surjective on points. Write for the underlying set of a presheaf and , , for the underlying function of a plot .
A presheaf on is concrete if each map , , is injective. The concretization of a presheaf has the set of plots of modulo , with quotient map . Lemma 47 states that is left adjoint to the inclusion of concrete presheaves into presheaves; in universal-arrow form, for every presheaf :
- is concrete;
- for every concrete presheaf and natural transformation there is a unique with .
Concretization is the first of the two left adjoints used to construct colimits of spaces.
Formalization Note The site is small ( in universe , presheaves valued in ), covering families are presieves, and the terminal domain is passed explicitly as . The adjunction is stated as the universal property of the unit , which is equivalent to it; is encoded as the image of (definition concretization), canonically the quotient of the paper.
