Let f1,…,fNf_1,\dots,f_Nf1,…,fN be C2C^2C2 with λI≺∇2FSH(w)≺ΛI\lambda I\prec\nabla^2F_{\mathcal S_H}(w)\prec\Lambda IλI≺∇2FSH(w)≺ΛI for every www and every sample of size bH≥1b_H\ge1bH≥1, where 0<λ,Λ0<\lambda,\Lambda0<λ,Λ. Let M,t≥1M,t\ge1M,t≥1, m~=min⁡{t,M}\tilde m=\min\{t,M\}m~=min{t,M}, and let the correction pairs in memory, (sj,yj)(s_j,y_j)(sj,yj) for t−m~<j≤tt-\tilde m<j\le tt−m~<j≤t, satisfy sj≠0s_j\neq0sj=0 and yj=∇2FSH(wˉ)sjy_j=\nabla^2F_{\mathcal S_H}(\bar w)s_jyj=∇2FSH(wˉ)sj for some point wˉ\bar wwˉ and some sample SH\mathcal S_HSH of size bHb_HbH. Then the direct L-BFGS matrices (3.7) satisfy

Tr⁡(Bt(m~))≤Tr⁡(Bt(0))+m~Λ.\operatorname{Tr}\big(B_t^{(\tilde m)}\big)\le\operatorname{Tr}\big(B_t^{(0)}\big)+\tilde m\Lambda .Tr(Bt(m~))≤Tr(Bt(0))+m~Λ.

Since Bt(0)=ytTytstTytIB_t^{(0)}=\frac{y_t^Ty_t}{s_t^Ty_t}IBt(0)=stTytytTytI has trace at most nΛn\LambdanΛ by (3.10), this bounds the largest eigenvalue of Bt+1=Bt(m~)B_{t+1}=B_t^{(\tilde m)}Bt+1=Bt(m~) uniformly in ttt (the constant M3M_3M3 of (3.11)).

Formalization Note The paper's chain also contains the intermediate bound by Tr⁡(Bt(0))+∑i∥yji∥2/(yjiTsji)\operatorname{Tr}(B_t^{(0)})+\sum_i\|y_{j_i}\|^2/(y_{j_i}^Ts_{j_i})Tr(Bt(0))+∑i∥yji∥2/(yjiTsji) and the final "≤M3\le M_3≤M3"; the statement records the explicit middle bound.

/-- Eq. (3.11): let `t ≥ 1`, `M ≥ 1`, `m̃ = min t M`, and let every pair `(s_j, y_j)` in the
memory window `t − m̃ < j ≤ t` have `s_j ≠ 0` and `y_j = ∇²F_{S_H}(w̄) s_j` for some point `w̄` and
some Hessian sample `S_H` of size `b_H`, where the subsampled Hessians of size `b_H` satisfy
(3.3). Then the direct L-BFGS matrix `B_{t+1} = B_t^{(m̃)}` satisfies
`Tr(B_t^{(m̃)}) ≤ Tr(B_t^{(0)}) + m̃ Λ`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
