Let V⊆U(2n)V \subseteq U(2^n)V⊆U(2n) be a finite set of unitaries, standing for Vn,G\mathcal V_{n,\mathcal G}Vn,G, and let SiS_iSi be the set of unitaries implementable in depth iii over VVV. For every unitary UUU and every l≥0l \ge 0l≥0, there is a circuit of exactly lll layers over VVV implementing UUU if and only if

S⌊l/2⌋† U  ∩  S⌈l/2⌉≠∅,S⌊l/2⌋†U={ X†U:X∈S⌊l/2⌋ }.S_{\lfloor l/2\rfloor}^\dagger\, U \;\cap\; S_{\lceil l/2\rceil} \neq \emptyset, \qquad S_{\lfloor l/2\rfloor}^\dagger U = \{\, X^\dagger U : X \in S_{\lfloor l/2\rfloor}\,\}.S⌊l/2⌋†U∩S⌈l/2⌉=∅,S⌊l/2⌋†U={X†U:X∈S⌊l/2⌋}.

This is the meet-in-the-middle observation: a depth-lll circuit can be found by generating only circuits of depth at most ⌈l/2⌉\lceil l/2\rceil⌈l/2⌉ and looking for a collision.

Formalization Note. The statement is made for every finite set VVV of unitaries; the paper's proof uses nothing else about Vn,G\mathcal V_{n,\mathcal G}Vn,G. It holds for l=0l = 0l=0 as well (U=IU = IU=I). ⌊l/2⌋\lfloor l/2\rfloor⌊l/2⌋ is l / 2 and ⌈l/2⌉\lceil l/2\rceil⌈l/2⌉ is (l + 1) / 2.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
