Consider NNN products with common margin p>0p>0p>0, served either by NNN dedicated resources of marginal cost c>0c>0c>0 (network SD) or by one flexible resource of marginal cost cN+1c_{N+1}cN+1 (network SF), all perfectly reliable. The firm has initial wealth w0w_0w0, and the demand vector X~\tilde XX~ is nonnegative with an arbitrary joint distribution. Let β≥1\beta\ge 1β≥1 and η∈(0,1]\eta\in(0,1]η∈(0,1]. Then for every flexible cost cN+1≤cc_{N+1}\le ccN+1≤c:

  1. for every nondecreasing utility uuu (the class U1U_1U1), every nonnegative SD investment KKK is matched by a nonnegative SF investment KN+1K_{N+1}KN+1 with
E[u(wSD(K))]≤E[u(wSF(KN+1))];E\big[u(w^{SD}(K))\big]\le E\big[u(w^{SF}(K_{N+1}))\big];E[u(wSD(K))]≤E[u(wSF(KN+1))];
  1. the same holds for the loss-averse objective (6);
  2. for the CVaR objective (8), every pair (K,v)(K,v)(K,v) with K≥0K\ge0K≥0 is matched by a pair (KN+1,v′)(K_{N+1},v')(KN+1,v′) with KN+1≥0K_{N+1}\ge 0KN+1≥0 and a CVaR bracket at least as large.

In the paper's terms: the flexibility premium satisfies Δ≥0\Delta\ge 0Δ≥0 for all u1∈U1u_1\in U_1u1∈U1, and in particular for the loss-averse and the CVaR objective functions. Together with Proposition 1 (risk neutrality), this identifies when the intuition "flexibility is worth paying for" is valid: whenever supply is perfectly reliable, whatever the demand distribution and whatever the (monotone) risk attitude.

Formalization Note The flexibility premium Δ=(cN+1I−c)/c\Delta=(c^I_{N+1}-c)/cΔ=(cN+1I−c)/c of Definitions 1–2 is not defined as a number (the indifference cost need not be unique); "Δ≥0\Delta\ge 0Δ≥0" is encoded as "SF is weakly preferred for every cN+1≤cc_{N+1}\le ccN+1≤c", which is how p. 41 reads Δ\DeltaΔ. "Weakly preferred" (VSF,∗≥VSD,∗V^{SF,*}\ge V^{SD,*}VSF,∗≥VSD,∗) is encoded without suprema, as the matching statements above. Perfect reliability (θ=1\theta=1θ=1) is built into the terminal wealths, which then no longer involve λ\lambdaλ. Nonnegative, measurable demand and p,c>0p,c>0p,c>0 are stated explicitly; no density, independence or integrability of demand is assumed ("Let X~\tilde XX~ have any joint distribution").

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
