For κ≥0\kappa\ge0κ≥0 and every a∈Ra\in\mathbb Ra∈R, the soft thresholding operator

Sκ(a)={a−κa>κ0∣a∣≤κa+κa<−κS_\kappa(a)=\begin{cases}a-\kappa & a>\kappa\\ 0 & |a|\le\kappa\\ a+\kappa & a<-\kappa\end{cases}Sκ(a)=⎩⎨⎧a−κ0a+κa>κ∣a∣≤κa<−κ

satisfies

Sκ(a)=(a−κ)+−(−a−κ)+,S_\kappa(a)=(a-\kappa)_+-(-a-\kappa)_+,Sκ(a)=(a−κ)+−(−a−κ)+,

where (t)+=max⁡(t,0)(t)_+=\max(t,0)(t)+=max(t,0).

This is the "equivalently" form of soft thresholding, written without cases.

Formalization Note The book leaves κ≥0\kappa\ge0κ≥0 implicit (it uses κ=λ/ρ\kappa=\lambda/\rhoκ=λ/ρ with λ,ρ>0\lambda,\rho>0λ,ρ>0); for κ<0\kappa<0κ<0 the identity fails (e.g. κ=−1\kappa=-1κ=−1, a=0a=0a=0), so the hypothesis is stated.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
