Let SSS be a finite set, let III be a finite index set, and let each index iii have a support set contained in SSS. For a real parameter ppp, the weighted sum over all subsets X⊆SX\subseteq SX⊆S of the number of supports contained in XXX equals the sum of the individual support weights:

∑X⊆Sp∣X∣(1−p)∣S∖X∣ ∣{i∈I:support⁡(i)⊆X}∣=∑i∈Ip∣support⁡(i)∣.\sum_{X\subseteq S}p^{|X|}(1-p)^{|S\setminus X|} \,\bigl|\{i\in I:\operatorname{support}(i)\subseteq X\}\bigr| = \sum_{i\in I}p^{|\operatorname{support}(i)|}.X⊆S∑p∣X∣(1−p)∣S∖X∣{i∈I:support(i)⊆X}=i∈I∑p∣support(i)∣.

This moment identity is the probabilistic averaging step in the crossing-lemma argument, applied respectively to vertices, edges, and crossing points.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
