Let PPP be an irreducible row-stochastic matrix on a nonempty finite state set, ρ\rhoρ a vector of one-step expected rewards, and V(0)V(0)V(0) a constant terminal-reward vector (Vi(0)=Vj(0)V_i(0) = V_j(0)Vi(0)=Vj(0) for all i,ji, ji,j). Let V(n)V(n)V(n) be the nnn-step expected return of the fixed policy, V(n)=ρ+PV(n−1)V(n) = \rho + P V(n-1)V(n)=ρ+PV(n−1). Then for every n≥1n \ge 1n≥1

V(n)−V(n−1)=Pn−1ρ.V(n) - V(n-1) = P^{n-1}\rho .V(n)−V(n−1)=Pn−1ρ.

This is the first step of Appendix A: the increments of the return are the images of ρ\rhoρ under the powers of PPP.

Formalization Note The paper prints (A 1) with no condition on V(0)V(0)V(0). Iterating (I 16) gives V(n)−V(n−1)=Pn−1(ρ+PV(0)−V(0))V(n) - V(n-1) = P^{n-1}(\rho + P V(0) - V(0))V(n)−V(n−1)=Pn−1(ρ+PV(0)−V(0)), so (A 1) holds exactly when PV(0)=V(0)P V(0) = V(0)PV(0)=V(0), which for an irreducible PPP means that V(0)V(0)V(0) is constant; that hypothesis is added here. It covers the paper's example, where V(0)=0V(0) = 0V(0)=0.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
