Let JJJ be a nonempty finite set of jobs with processing times tj≥0t_j\ge 0tj≥0, processed on one machine from time 000, and let each job have a continuous, bounded, non-decreasing deferral cost PjP_jPj, where Pj(s)P_j(s)Pj(s) is the cost of completing jjj at time sss. For each y>0y>0y>0 let SD(y)S_D(y)SD(y) be a schedule of JJJ ordered by non-decreasing due-dates Dj=Pj∗(y)D_j=P_j^*(y)Dj=Pj∗(y) (ties broken arbitrarily). Let y∗>0y^*>0y∗>0 be such that

  1. SD(y∗)S_D(y^*)SD(y∗) has no late jobs, and
  2. for all 0<y<y∗0<y<y^*0<y<y∗, SD(y)S_D(y)SD(y) has at least one late job.

Then for every schedule SSS of JJJ,

max⁡j∈JPj(CjSD(y∗))  ≤  max⁡j∈JPj(CjS),\max_{j\in J} P_j\bigl(C_j^{S_D(y^*)}\bigr)\;\le\;\max_{j\in J} P_j\bigl(C_j^{S}\bigr),j∈JmaxPj(CjSD(y∗))≤j∈JmaxPj(CjS),

where CjSC_j^{S}CjS is the completion time of jjj in SSS: the schedule SD(y∗)S_D(y^*)SD(y∗) has minimal maximum deferral cost.

This reduces the single-machine min–max deferral cost problem to a one-parameter family of due-date sorts, searched over the cost level yyy.

Formalization Note y∗y^*y∗ is given together with its two defining properties; its existence is the separate milestone exists_ystar. The minimum is over all schedules of JJJ, not only over the SD(y)S_D(y)SD(y). The family y↦SD(y)y\mapsto S_D(y)y↦SD(y) is arbitrary subject to the ordering condition, so every tie-break is covered. "For all y<y∗y<y^*y<y∗" is read as 0<y<y∗0<y<y^*0<y<y∗. Times are measured from 000, and Pj∗P_j^*Pj∗ is computed over times s≥0s\ge0s≥0 (see the definition of P∗P^*P∗). tj≥0t_j\ge0tj≥0 is added (processing times are durations).
