Let v1,…,vnv_1,\dots,v_nv1,…,vn be normalized, monotone valuations and let xxx be LP-feasible with value L=∑i,Sxi,Svi(S)L=\sum_{i,S}x_{i,S}v_i(S)L=∑i,Sxi,Svi(S). Suppose L>3 vi(M)L>3\,v_i(M)L>3vi(M) for every bidder iii, i.e. L>3max⁡ivi(M)L>3\max_i v_i(M)L>3maxivi(M). Let A=∑ivi(Si)A=\sum_i v_i(S_i)A=∑ivi(Si) be the welfare of the randomized-rounding preallocation and BBB the event A<L/3A<L/3A<L/3. Then

Pr⁡[B]=Pr⁡[A<L3]<34.\Pr[B]=\Pr\Big[A<\frac{L}{3}\Big]<\frac34.Pr[B]=Pr[A<3L]<43.

Together with the items bound, this shows that one round of randomized rounding produces a preallocation with both required properties with constant probability.

Formalization Note The paper normalizes max⁡ivi(M)=1\max_i v_i(M)=1maxivi(M)=1 and assumes OPT∗>3OPT^*>3OPT∗>3; the statement uses the scale-free equivalent L>3max⁡ivi(M)L>3\max_i v_i(M)L>3maxivi(M). The paper's definition of BBB drops the sum ("vi(Si)<13OPT∗v_i(S_i)<\frac13 OPT^*vi(Si)<31OPT∗"); the display Pr⁡[B]=Pr⁡[A<OPT∗/3]\Pr[B]=\Pr[A<OPT^*/3]Pr[B]=Pr[A<OPT∗/3] fixes the meaning used here. The paper's text announces Pr⁡[B]<3/4\Pr[B]<3/4Pr[B]<3/4 and its display ends with ≤3/4\le 3/4≤3/4; the strict inequality is stated, which the display's middle bound 9/(4 OPT∗)9/(4\,OPT^*)9/(4OPT∗) with OPT∗>3OPT^*>3OPT∗>3 gives. The statement assumes only LP feasibility of xxx (the paper uses the optimal xxx, which is a special case).

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
