This statement identifies a second Fréchet derivative evaluated twice in one direction with a one-dimensional second derivative.

Let WWW be a real normed space, let Φ:W→R\Phi:W\to\mathbb RΦ:W→R, and let y∈Wy\in Wy∈W. Assume Φ\PhiΦ is C2C^2C2 at yyy. For every v∈Wv\in Wv∈W,

(D(DΦ)(y)v)v=d2dε2Φ(y+εv)∣ε=0.\bigl(D(D\Phi)(y)v\bigr)v =\left.\frac{d^2}{d\varepsilon^2}\Phi(y+\varepsilon v)\right|_{\varepsilon=0}.(D(DΦ)(y)v)v=dε2d2Φ(y+εv)ε=0.

This general calculus identity is used to convert second directional derivatives into derivatives along scalar lines.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
