This formalizes the centered-difference bounds used in the estimate associated with Theorem 2.5 of Letwin (arXiv:2607.24164v1).

Let u:Rn→Ru:\mathbb R^n\to\mathbb Ru:Rn→R be convex on the whole space, let D∈RD\in\mathbb RD∈R, and let h∈Rnh\in\mathbb R^nh∈Rn. Assume that for every xxx,

uh(x):=u(x+h)+u(x−h)−2u(x)≤D∥h∥2.u_h(x):=u(x+h)+u(x-h)-2u(x)\le D\|h\|^2.uh(x):=u(x+h)+u(x−h)−2u(x)≤D∥h∥2.

Then for every xxx,

0≤νh(x)≤D∥h∥2,0\le \nu_h(x)\le D\|h\|^2,0≤νh(x)≤D∥h∥2,

and also 0≤D∥h∥20\le D\|h\|^20≤D∥h∥2. The declaration is centeredDifference_nonneg_le_readable. No differentiability or separate sign assumption on DDD is made; the nonnegativity follows from convexity and the asserted upper bound.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
