Let (Ω,F,P)(\Omega,\mathcal F,\mathbb P)(Ω,F,P) be a probability space, H⊆F\mathcal H \subseteq \mathcal FH⊆F a sub-σ\sigmaσ-field, XXX an integrable random variable, and φ:R×Ω→R\varphi : \mathbb R \times \Omega \to \mathbb Rφ:R×Ω→R such that

  1. x↦φ(x,ω)x \mapsto \varphi(x,\omega)x↦φ(x,ω) is non-decreasing for each ω\omegaω;
  2. ω↦φ(x,ω)\omega \mapsto \varphi(x,\omega)ω↦φ(x,ω) is H\mathcal HH-measurable for each xxx (φ(⋅,ω)\varphi(\cdot,\omega)φ(⋅,ω) is a deterministic function given H\mathcal HH).

Then

E[max⁡{X(ω)+φ(X(ω),ω),0}]≥E[max⁡{E(X∣H)(ω)+φ(X(ω),ω),0}].\mathbb E\big[\max\{X(\omega) + \varphi(X(\omega),\omega), 0\}\big] \ge \mathbb E\big[\max\{\mathbb E(X\mid\mathcal H)(\omega) + \varphi(X(\omega),\omega), 0\}\big].E[max{X(ω)+φ(X(ω),ω),0}]≥E[max{E(X∣H)(ω)+φ(X(ω),ω),0}].

This is Lemma 1 conditioned on H\mathcal HH; Corollary 2 applies it to a maximum of affine functions of XXX.

Formalization Note Added, disclosed: φ\varphiφ is jointly measurable for B(R)⊗H\mathcal B(\mathbb R) \otimes \mathcal HB(R)⊗H, so that ω↦φ(X(ω),ω)\omega \mapsto \varphi(X(\omega),\omega)ω↦φ(X(ω),ω) is a random variable, which the page's expectations presuppose and (i)–(ii) do not imply. E∣X∣<∞\mathbb E|X| < \inftyE∣X∣<∞ is inherited from Lemma 1. Both sides are lower Lebesgue integrals in [0,∞][0,\infty][0,∞]. "Increasing" means non-decreasing.

/-- Corollary 1, p. 57, (133): the conditional version of Lemma 1. `φ(x, ω)` is non-decreasing in
`x` for each `ω`, `ℋ`-measurable in `ω` for each `x`, and (disclosed) jointly measurable for
`Borel(ℝ) ⊗ ℋ`; `X` is integrable. Then
`𝔼[max{X + φ(X, ·), 0}] ≥ 𝔼[max{𝔼(X|ℋ) + φ(X, ·), 0}]`, both sides in `[0, ∞]`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
