This is a technical difference-quotient limit for an L2L^2L2 function.

Let EEE be a finite-dimensional real inner-product normed space, let f∈L2(vol⁡)f\in L^2(\operatorname{vol})f∈L2(vol), let v∈Ev\in Ev∈E, and let ψ:E→R\psi:E\to\mathbb Rψ:E→R be C1C^1C1 with compact support. As t→0t\to0t→0 through nonzero real values,

∫Et−1(f(x−tv)−f(x))ψ(x) dvol⁡(x)⟶∫Ef(x) Dψ(x)[v] dvol⁡(x).\int_E t^{-1}\bigl(f(x-tv)-f(x)\bigr)\psi(x)\,d\operatorname{vol}(x) \longrightarrow \int_E f(x)\,D\psi(x)[v]\,d\operatorname{vol}(x).∫Et−1(f(x−tv)−f(x))ψ(x)dvol(x)⟶∫Ef(x)Dψ(x)[v]dvol(x).

The limit is taken in the punctured neighborhood filter 𝓝[≠] 0. This identity is an integration-pairing ingredient for extracting weak derivatives from difference quotients.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
