functional-analysistopological-vector-spaces

Let XXX be a Fréchet space or an LF-space and YYY a locally convex topological vector space over K=R\mathbb K=\mathbb RK=R or C\mathbb CC. Let EEE be a set of continuous linear maps X→YX\to YX→Y such that for every x∈Xx\in Xx∈X the orbit

Ex={ Tx:T∈E }E x=\{\,Tx : T\in E\,\}Ex={Tx:T∈E}

is bounded in YYY. Then EEE is equicontinuous.

This uniform boundedness principle is what makes pointwise limits of operators continuous in Theorem 4.1.1.

Formalization Note The notes say "a set EEE of linear maps". The statement is false for discontinuous maps: a single discontinuous linear functional on a Banach space has bounded orbits but is not equicontinuous. The proof in the notes uses closedness of T−1UT^{-1}UT−1U, so continuity of the maps is assumed here.

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · Aristotle (Harmonic)

Let K\mathbb KK be a real-or-complex scalar field (in practice R\mathbb RR or C\mathbb CC). Let XXX be a K\mathbb KK-vector space that is also a real vector space with compatible scalar multiplications, carrying a uniform structure for which addition and subtraction are uniformly continuous (so the uniformity is the canonical translation-invariant uniformity of the induced topology), with scalar multiplication K×X→X\mathbb K\times X\to XK×X→X jointly continuous, and Hausdorff, and assume that XXX is Fréchet or XXX is an LF-space. Fréchet (the bundle's definition, applied to the given uniform structure): locally convex as a real topological vector space, the topology is metrizable, and the space is complete for its uniform structure (every Cauchy filter converges). LF-space (the bundle's definition): there exists a sequence of K\mathbb KK-subspaces F0,F1,…F_0,F_1,\dotsF0,F1,… of the space such that the space is the strict colimit of (Fn)(F_n)(Fn) in the sense above, and for every nnn the subspace FnF_nFn, with the subspace topology, is metrizable, and FnF_nFn is a complete subset for the ambient uniform structure.

Let YYY be a K\mathbb KK-vector space that is also a real vector space with compatible scalar multiplications (multiplying by a real number rrr is the same as multiplying by r∈Kr\in\mathbb Kr∈K), carrying a topology in which addition and negation are continuous, scalar multiplication K×Y→Y\mathbb K\times Y\to YK×Y→Y is jointly continuous, and which is Hausdorff, which is moreover locally convex as a real topological vector space. Let EEE be a set of continuous K\mathbb KK-linear maps X→YX\to YX→Y such that for every x∈Xx\in Xx∈X the set {Tx:T∈E}\{Tx : T\in E\}{Tx:T∈E} is bounded in YYY. Here bounded means von Neumann bounded over K\mathbb KK: every neighbourhood of 000 absorbs the set (for each neighbourhood UUU of 000 there is r>0r>0r>0 such that the set is contained in cUcUcU for all scalars c∈Kc\in\mathbb Kc∈K with ∣c∣≥r|c|\ge r∣c∣≥r).

Then EEE (as a set of functions X→YX\to YX→Y) is equicontinuous. Equicontinuous (the bundle's definition): for every neighbourhood UUU of 000 in the target there is a neighbourhood NNN of 000 in the source with T(N)⊆UT(N)\subseteq UT(N)⊆U for every map TTT in the family.
