Let (Ω,ΓD,ΓN)(\Omega, \Gamma_D, \Gamma_N)(Ω,ΓD,ΓN) be a mixed domain with outer unit normal ν\nuν, let μ1,μ2>0\mu_1, \mu_2 > 0μ1,μ2>0 and τ>0\tau > 0τ>0, and let λ∈C\lambda \in \mathbb Cλ∈C. Let φ:Rn→C\varphi : \mathbb R^n \to \mathbb Cφ:Rn→C be C2C^2C2 in Ω\OmegaΩ and C1C^1C1 on Ω‾\overline\OmegaΩ, and suppose that φ\varphiφ solves the eigenvalue problem (5.2):

{−Δφ+λ2φ=0in Ω,φ=0on ΓD,∂φ∂ν=−(μ1+μ2e−λτ)λφon ΓN.\begin{cases} -\Delta\varphi + \lambda^2\varphi = 0 & \text{in } \Omega,\\ \varphi = 0 & \text{on } \Gamma_D,\\ \dfrac{\partial\varphi}{\partial\nu} = -(\mu_1 + \mu_2 e^{-\lambda\tau})\lambda\varphi & \text{on } \Gamma_N. \end{cases}⎩⎨⎧−Δφ+λ2φ=0φ=0∂ν∂φ=−(μ1+μ2e−λτ)λφin Ω,on ΓD,on ΓN.

Then the separated function

u(x,t)=eλtφ(x)u(x,t) = e^{\lambda t}\varphi(x)u(x,t)=eλtφ(x)

is a classical solution of the wave equation with delayed boundary feedback (5.1) = (1.1)–(1.3) with delay τ\tauτ.

This is the reduction of §5.1: every solution of the spectral problem (5.2) yields an explicit solution of the evolution problem, and the rest of the section only has to produce λ=ib\lambda = ibλ=ib and φ\varphiφ.

Formalization Note The solution is complex-valued and defined for all t∈Rt \in \mathbb Rt∈R; its values at t≤0t \le 0t≤0 are the initial data and the history. The normal derivative is taken within Ω‾\overline\OmegaΩ.

/-- (5.1)–(5.2): if `λ ∈ ℂ` and `φ` (`C²` in `Ω`, `C¹` up to the boundary) solves the eigenvalue
problem `-Δφ + λ²φ = 0` in `Ω`, `φ = 0` on `Γ_D`, `∂φ/∂ν = -(μ₁ + μ₂ e^{-λτ}) λ φ` on `Γ_N`,
then `u(x, t) = e^{λt} φ(x)` is a classical solution of (5.1). -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
