Bounded surprise pins the total of every branch.

Let CCC be a chunk system with online escapes (ChunkSystemB) on a metric space with marked points s,ts,ts,t, with sizes c0,…,cm−1c_0,\dots,c_{m-1}c0,…,cm−1 adapted to its filtration, and with trivial initial information (the time-000 history is the same for every outcome). Write Σ(ω)=∑ici(ω)\Sigma(\omega)=\sum_i c_i(\omega)Σ(ω)=∑ici(ω) for the total size of the branch ω\omegaω, E[Σ]\mathbb{E}[\Sigma]E[Σ] for its expectation, and Fh=E[∑j≥hcj∣Fh]F_h=\mathbb{E}\bigl[\sum_{j\ge h}c_j\mid \mathcal F_h\bigr]Fh=E[∑j≥hcj∣Fh] for the conditional expected remaining size (condRemaining).

The bounded-surprise property with slack cmax⁡c_{\max}cmax (BoundedSurprise) demands, in every branch and for every window [a,b)[a,b)[a,b) of chunk indices,

∑a≤j<bcj  ≤  Fa−Fb+cmax⁡.\sum_{a\le j<b}c_j\;\le\;F_a-F_b+c_{\max}.a≤j<b∑cj≤Fa−Fb+cmax.

Statement. If CCC has trivial initial information and satisfies bounded surprise with slack cmax⁡c_{\max}cmax, then for every outcome ω\omegaω

Σ(ω)  ≤  E[Σ]+cmax⁡.\Sigma(\omega)\;\le\;\mathbb{E}[\Sigma]+c_{\max}.Σ(ω)≤E[Σ]+cmax.

Why this matters. Since cjc_jcj is Fj\mathcal F_jFj-measurable, one has Fa=E[Σ∣Fa]−∑j<acjF_a=\mathbb{E}[\Sigma\mid\mathcal F_a]-\sum_{j<a}c_jFa=E[Σ∣Fa]−∑j<acj, so the bounded-surprise inequality for the window [a,b)[a,b)[a,b) is equivalent to E[Σ∣Fb]−E[Σ∣Fa]≤cmax⁡\mathbb{E}[\Sigma\mid\mathcal F_b]-\mathbb{E}[\Sigma\mid\mathcal F_a]\le c_{\max}E[Σ∣Fb]−E[Σ∣Fa]≤cmax: the Doob martingale of the total never rises by more than cmax⁡c_{\max}cmax between any two times. The statement is the case a=0a=0a=0, b=mb=mb=m of this observation, where F0=E[Σ]F_0=\mathbb{E}[\Sigma]F0=E[Σ] (trivial initial information) and Fm=0F_m=0Fm=0. It shows that bounded surprise with a slack of the order of a single chunk is a near-determinism condition on the total, and therefore cannot be satisfied by a chunk system whose expected total is boosted by a random race imbalance of larger order, such as the stage-2 construction of Claim 13 of Bubeck--Coester--Rabani (STOC 2023), whose total fluctuates by Θ(κ)\Theta(\sqrt{\kappa})Θ(κ) chunk sizes. Any regrouping lemma meant to be applied to such systems must therefore use a weaker hypothesis than BoundedSurprise with slack equal to the chunk ceiling.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
