Toeplitz' Inscribed Square Problem (Square Peg Problem): Does every simple closed curve (Jordan curve) in the plane contain the four vertices of a square?

Proposed by Otto Toeplitz in 1911. Proved for smooth or piecewise-smooth curves, rectifiable curves with various regularity conditions, and locally monotone curves. The general case for arbitrary continuous (Jordan) curves remains open after over 100 years.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
