Proposition 4 (corrected) — for GGG uniform the minimax loss bid is unique, solves Equation (3), has minimax loss u+(b∗)−u−(b∗)u^+(b^*)-u^-(b^*)u+(b∗)−u−(b∗), and increases in nnn

Let n≥2n \ge 2n≥2 bidders, 0<τ<10 < \tau < 10<τ<1, 0≤L<v10 \le L < v_10≤L<v1, and let GGG be uniform on [L,v1][L, v_1][L,v1], G(x)=(x−L)/(v1−L)G(x) = (x-L)/(v_1-L)G(x)=(x−L)/(v1−L). Let Bτ,G\mathcal B_{\tau,G}Bτ,G be the (corrected) ambiguity set of variation in bidding, and let u+u^+u+, u−u^-u−, b~=v1−(v1−L)/(nτ)\tilde b = v_1 - (v_1-L)/(n\tau)b~=v1−(v1−L)/(nτ) be as in the ClosedForms file. Then:

  1. Existence and uniqueness. There is exactly one minimax loss bid b1∗b_1^*b1∗, i.e. exactly one b1∗≥0b_1^* \ge 0b1∗≥0 minimizing sup⁡B∈Bτ,Gl(b1,B∣v1)\sup_{B \in \mathcal B_{\tau,G}} l(b_1, B \mid v_1)supB∈Bτ,Gl(b1,B∣v1) over all b1≥0b_1 \ge 0b1≥0.
  2. Characterization. A bid bbb is the minimax loss bid if and only if b∈[max⁡{L,b~},v1]b \in [\max\{L,\tilde b\}, v_1]b∈[max{L,b~},v1] and
u+(max⁡{L,b~})−u+(b)=u+(b)−u−(b).(3)u^+(\max\{L,\tilde b\}) - u^+(b) = u^+(b) - u^-(b). \tag{3}u+(max{L,b~})−u+(b)=u+(b)−u−(b).(3)
  1. Minimax loss. The minimax loss equals l1∗=u+(b1∗)−u−(b1∗)l_1^* = u^+(b_1^*) - u^-(b_1^*)l1∗=u+(b1∗)−u−(b1∗).
  2. Monotonicity in nnn. If b1∗b_1^*b1∗ is the minimax loss bid with nnn bidders and b1∗′b_1^{*\prime}b1∗′ the one with n+1n+1n+1 bidders (same τ\tauτ, LLL, v1v_1v1), then b1∗<b1∗′b_1^* < b_1^{*\prime}b1∗<b1∗′.

This is the paper's recommended bid for variation in bidding: a closed-form, robust bid that requires only nnn, τ\tauτ, LLL and v1v_1v1, with a guarantee on the loss against every environment in the ambiguity set.

Formalization Note. The minimax loss bid is defined from the loss (Model file): bids range over all b≥0b \ge 0b≥0, the loss is a supremum over all best responses bˉ≥0\bar b \ge 0bˉ≥0, and the maximal loss is a supremum over every distribution in Bτ,G\mathcal B_{\tau,G}Bτ,G, all of whose admissible unconstrained-bid laws HHH on [L,∞)n−1[L,\infty)^{n-1}[L,∞)n−1 are included. The ambiguity set is corrected (unconstrained bids ≥L\ge L≥L and independent of who is constrained); with the printed set the proposition is false for n≥3n \ge 3n≥3. The range restriction in item 2 comes from p. 49 ("X only contains elements in [max⁡{L,b~},v1][\max\{L,\tilde b\}, v_1][max{L,b~},v1]"). The paper differentiates in a real nnn; item 4 compares the integers nnn and n+1n+1n+1. The hypotheses 0<τ<10 < \tau < 10<τ<1 and 0≤L<v10 \le L < v_10≤L<v1 are implicit in the paper (τ is a probability and the proof uses τ < 1 on p. 50; bids are non-negative; GGG requires v1>Lv_1 > Lv1>L).
