Lemma 2 — for odd composite M, every optimal plan of the explicit periodic instance has q₂ = M and 1 < gcd(q₁, M) < M
ProvedJRPHard.Periodic.lemma_2Let be an odd composite number. Consider the two-item periodic joint replenishment instance
with
Then:
- , and every coefficient is a natural number at most (so its size is at most );
- the instance has an optimal solution;
- every optimal solution satisfies
Thus is a non-trivial divisor of for any optimal solution, so an exact solver for the two-item periodic JRP factors odd composite numbers. This is the mathematical core of Theorem 1(b) of the paper.
Formalization Note The paper states "there is a two-item instance"; the instance here is the explicit one built in the first sentence of the proof (a stronger statement). The paper's "whose optimal solutions satisfy" is formalized as existence of an optimal solution together with the property for every optimal solution, so the claim is not vacuous. "Size at most " is stated as "at most ", which is the same bound in any logarithm base. is the model's assumption (p. 10). Optimal solutions may be non-unique (for both and are optimal); nothing about which divisor appears is claimed. Odd composite is encoded as: odd, , and not prime. Polynomial running time (Theorem 1(b) itself) is not formalized.
