The ppp-adic logarithm criterion for Leopoldt's conjecture. Let ppp be a prime and KKK a number field with unit group E=OK×E=\mathcal O_K^\timesE=OK× of Z\mathbb ZZ-rank r=r1+r2−1r=r_1+r_2-1r=r1+r2−1. For each prime p∣p\mathfrak p\mid pp∣p of OK\mathcal O_KOK let KpK_{\mathfrak p}Kp be the completion and let

ι:E→U=∏p∣pOp×\iota: E\to U=\prod_{\mathfrak p\mid p}\mathcal O_{\mathfrak p}^\timesι:E→U=p∣p∏Op×

be the diagonal embedding. Each KpK_{\mathfrak p}Kp is a Zp\mathbb Z_pZp-module via the canonical map Zp→Kp\mathbb Z_p\to K_{\mathfrak p}Zp→Kp, and log⁡p\log_plogp denotes the ppp-adic logarithm (Iwasawa's form log⁡px=lim⁡n(xpn−1)/pn\log_p x=\lim_n (x^{p^n}-1)/p^nlogpx=limn(xpn−1)/pn).

Let η1,…,ηr∈E\eta_1,\dots,\eta_r\in Eη1,…,ηr∈E be units such that

  1. the subgroup ⟨η1,…,ηr⟩\langle\eta_1,\dots,\eta_r\rangle⟨η1,…,ηr⟩ has finite index in EEE (so the ηi\eta_iηi are, up to finite index, a system of fundamental units; e.g. ηi=εiM\eta_i=\varepsilon_i^Mηi=εiM for a fundamental system εi\varepsilon_iεi), and
  2. every local image lies in the small ball: ∣ι(ηi)p−1∣p≤∣p∣p2|\iota(\eta_i)_{\mathfrak p}-1|_{\mathfrak p}\le |p|_{\mathfrak p}^2∣ι(ηi)p−1∣p≤∣p∣p2 for all iii and all p∣p\mathfrak p\mid pp∣p.

Then Leopoldt's conjecture holds for KKK at ppp (i.e. the Leopoldt defect DL(K)=rk⁡ZE−rk⁡Zpι(E)‾\mathcal D_L(K)=\operatorname{rk}_{\mathbb Z}E-\operatorname{rk}_{\mathbb Z_p}\overline{\iota(E)}DL(K)=rkZE−rkZpι(E) vanishes) if and only if the vectors of ppp-adic logarithms

(log⁡pι(ηi)p)p∣p∈∏p∣pKp,i=1,…,r,\Big(\log_p \iota(\eta_i)_{\mathfrak p}\Big)_{\mathfrak p\mid p}\in\prod_{\mathfrak p\mid p}K_{\mathfrak p},\qquad i=1,\dots,r,(logpι(ηi)p)p∣p∈p∣p∏Kp,i=1,…,r,

are linearly independent over Zp\mathbb Z_pZp.

This is the classical reformulation of Leopoldt's conjecture as the non-vanishing of the ppp-adic regulator: the Zp\mathbb Z_pZp-rank of the closure ι(E)‾\overline{\iota(E)}ι(E) equals the Zp\mathbb Z_pZp-rank of the Zp\mathbb Z_pZp-span of the logarithms of a basis of (a finite-index subgroup of) the units. It turns the topological rank condition in the definition of the defect into a linear-algebra condition on explicit ppp-adic numbers.

Formalization Note. KpK_{\mathfrak p}Kp is v.1.adicCompletion K for v : Leopoldt.PrimesOver p K, with the platform's Zp\mathbb Z_pZp-algebra instance Leopoldt.instAlgebraPadicIntAdicCompletion; log⁡p\log_plogp is PadicLog.log, which on the ball ∣x−1∣≤∣p∣2|x-1|\le|p|^2∣x−1∣≤∣p∣2 is an isometric homomorphism satisfying log⁡p(xa)=alog⁡px\log_p(x^a)=a\log_p xlogp(xa)=alogpx for a∈Zpa\in\mathbb Z_pa∈Zp. The ball hypothesis can always be achieved by replacing the ηi\eta_iηi with a common power.
