Let m≥1m\ge 1m≥1 be an integer and let α∈C\alpha\in\mathbb Cα∈C with α≠αˉ\alpha\ne\bar\alphaα=αˉ, that is, α∉R\alpha\notin\mathbb Rα∈/R; no condition on ∣α∣|\alpha|∣α∣ is imposed. Let Cm,α={z∈C:Re⁡(zm(∣z∣2+α))=0}C_{m,\alpha}=\{z\in\mathbb C:\operatorname{Re}\bigl(z^m(|z|^2+\alpha)\bigr)=0\}Cm,α={z∈C:Re(zm(∣z∣2+α))=0} and let C^m,α\widehat C_{m,\alpha}Cm,α be its closure in the Riemann sphere C^=C∪{∞}\widehat{\mathbb C}=\mathbb C\cup\{\infty\}C=C∪{∞}. Complex conjugation p↦pˉp\mapsto\bar pp↦pˉ acts on C^\widehat{\mathbb C}C, with ∞ˉ=∞\bar\infty=\infty∞ˉ=∞.

Identify C^\widehat{\mathbb C}C with the complex projective line P1\mathbb P^1P1 by ι(z)=[z:1]\iota(z)=[z:1]ι(z)=[z:1] for z∈Cz\in\mathbb Cz∈C and ι(∞)=[1:0]\iota(\infty)=[1:0]ι(∞)=[1:0]. For x=(x0,x1)x=(x_0,x_1)x=(x0,x1) and y=(y0,y1)y=(y_0,y_1)y=(y0,y1) in C2\mathbb C^2C2 let

Fα(x,y)=α x0mx1 y1m+1+x0m+1y0 y1m+αˉ x1m+1y0m y1+x0 x1m y0m+1,F_\alpha(x,y)=\alpha\,x_0^m x_1\,y_1^{m+1}+x_0^{m+1}y_0\,y_1^m+\bar\alpha\,x_1^{m+1}y_0^m\,y_1+x_0\,x_1^m\,y_0^{m+1},Fα(x,y)=αx0mx1y1m+1+x0m+1y0y1m+αˉx1m+1y0my1+x0x1my0m+1,

the bihomogeneous form of bidegree (m+1,m+1)(m+1,m+1)(m+1,m+1) with Fα((X,1),(Y,1))=Pα(X,Y)=Xm(α+XY)+Ym(αˉ+XY)F_\alpha\bigl((X,1),(Y,1)\bigr)=P_\alpha(X,Y)=X^m(\alpha+XY)+Y^m(\bar\alpha+XY)Fα((X,1),(Y,1))=Pα(X,Y)=Xm(α+XY)+Ym(αˉ+XY), and let Vα={([x],[y])∈P1×P1:Fα(x,y)=0}V_\alpha=\{([x],[y])\in\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1:F_\alpha(x,y)=0\}Vα={([x],[y])∈P1×P1:Fα(x,y)=0} be its zero set.

Then for every p∈C^p\in\widehat{\mathbb C}p∈C

(ι(p), ι(pˉ))∈Vα  ⟺  p∈C^m,α.\bigl(\iota(p),\,\iota(\bar p)\bigr)\in V_\alpha\iff p\in\widehat C_{m,\alpha}.(ι(p),ι(pˉ))∈Vα⟺p∈Cm,α.

The note complexifies the plane curve by X=zX=zX=z, Y=zˉY=\bar zY=zˉ and considers the closure VαV_\alphaVα of the curve Pα=0P_\alpha=0Pα=0 of equation (6) in P1×P1\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1P1×P1, which is given by the bihomogeneous equation above. This result says that the sphere, embedded in P1×P1\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1P1×P1 by p↦(p,pˉ)p\mapsto(p,\bar p)p↦(p,pˉ), meets VαV_\alphaVα exactly in C^m,α\widehat C_{m,\alpha}Cm,α, the point at infinity included. The formalization uses it to pass between Möbius maps of the sphere and the induced maps of P1×P1\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1P1×P1, as in the proof of Theorem 2.

Formalization Note: the sphere is OnePoint ℂ, P1\mathbb P^1P1 is Projectivization ℂ (Fin 2 → ℂ) and ι\iotaι is Mathlib's OnePoint.equivProjectivization. VαV_\alphaVα is defined as the zero set of FαF_\alphaFα evaluated on chosen representatives, which is harmless because FαF_\alphaFα is bihomogeneous, and C^m,α\widehat C_{m,\alpha}Cm,α is the topological closure in OnePoint ℂ.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
