For a subgroup GGG of the Euclidean motion group EdE_dEd of Rd\mathbb{R}^dRd, every element g∈Gg\in Gg∈G decomposes as g(x)=lin(g)(x)+g(0)g(x)=\mathrm{lin}(g)(x)+g(0)g(x)=lin(g)(x)+g(0) with lin(g)\mathrm{lin}(g)lin(g) a linear isometry. Since lin(gh)=lin(g)lin(h)\mathrm{lin}(gh)=\mathrm{lin}(g)\mathrm{lin}(h)lin(gh)=lin(g)lin(h), the assignment

lin:G⟶O(d),g⟼lin(g)\mathrm{lin}:G\longrightarrow O(d),\qquad g\longmapsto \mathrm{lin}(g)lin:G⟶O(d),g⟼lin(g)

is a group homomorphism. Its image is the point group of GGG and its kernel is the subgroup of translations contained in GGG; this homomorphism is the exact sequence through which a space group is presented as an extension of its point group by its translation lattice.

# The linear part homomorphism of a group of Euclidean isometries

For a subgroup `G` of the Euclidean motion group `E_d`, the map sending an element of `G` to
its linear part is a group homomorphism `G →* O(d)`. Its range is the point group of `G` and
its kernel is the subgroup of translations belonging to `G`.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
