Let H(n)H(n)H(n) be the least mmm such that some f:P(X)→Xf:\mathcal P(X)\to Xf:P(X)→X, ∣X∣=n|X|=n∣X∣=n, satisfies {f(A):A⊆Y}=X\{f(A):A\subseteq Y\}=X{f(A):A⊆Y}=X for all Y⊆XY\subseteq XY⊆X with ∣Y∣≥m|Y|\ge m∣Y∣≥m (Erdős Problem 624). Say TrackBad(n,m,s)\mathrm{TrackBad}(n,m,s)TrackBad(n,m,s) holds if for every family of maps gB:P(U)→Ug_B:\mathcal P(U)\to UgB:P(U)→U (∣U∣=n|U|=n∣U∣=n) indexed by the subsets BBB of an sss-set ZZZ, there are Y⊆UY\subseteq UY⊆U with ∣Y∣=m|Y|=m∣Y∣=m and u∈Uu\in Uu∈U such that u∉{gB(A):A⊆Y}u\notin\{g_B(A):A\subseteq Y\}u∈/{gB(A):A⊆Y} for every BBB. Theorem. If n≥1n\ge1n≥1 and TrackBad(n,m,s)\mathrm{TrackBad}(n,m,s)TrackBad(n,m,s), then

H(n+s)>m+s.H(n+s)>m+s.H(n+s)>m+s.

Given fff on U⊔ZU\sqcup ZU⊔Z, set gB(A)=π(f(A∪B))g_B(A)=\pi(f(A\cup B))gB(A)=π(f(A∪B)) for a retraction π\piπ onto UUU; a common hole uuu is missed by fff on Y∪ZY\cup ZY∪Z. This turns a multi-track deficiency statement into an additive gain in the threshold.

Formalization Note. U=Fin nU=\mathrm{Fin}\,nU=Finn, Z=Fin sZ=\mathrm{Fin}\,sZ=Fins, U⊔Z=Fin(n+s)U\sqcup Z=\mathrm{Fin}(n+s)U⊔Z=Fin(n+s). The hypothesis n≥1n\ge1n≥1 is necessary: for n=0n=0n=0 there are no maps into UUU and TrackBad holds vacuously.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
