Consider the linear FBSDE (4.1) with constant coefficients and σ3=0\sigma_3=0σ3=0, terminal coefficient h∈Rh\in\mathbb Rh∈R, and its dominating ODE

yt=h+∫tTF(ys) ds,F(y)=f1+[f2+b1+σ1f3]y+[b2+f3σ2+b3σ1]y2+σ2b3y3.(5.3–5.4)y_t=h+\int_t^T F(y_s)\,ds,\qquad F(y)=f_1+[f_2+b_1+\sigma_1f_3]y+[b_2+f_3\sigma_2+b_3\sigma_1]y^2+\sigma_2b_3y^3. \tag{5.3–5.4}yt=h+∫tTF(ys)ds,F(y)=f1+[f2+b1+σ1f3]y+[b2+f3σ2+b3σ1]y2+σ2b3y3.(5.3–5.4)

Then (5.3) has a bounded solution on [0,T][0,T][0,T] for every T>0T>0T>0 if and only if one of the following holds:

  1. F(h)≥0F(h)\ge0F(h)≥0 and FFF has a zero in [h,∞)[h,\infty)[h,∞);
  2. F(h)≤0F(h)\le0F(h)≤0 and FFF has a zero in (−∞,h](-\infty,h](−∞,h];
  3. σ2b3=0\sigma_2b_3=0σ2b3=0 and b2+f3σ2+b3σ1=0b_2+f_3\sigma_2+b_3\sigma_1=0b2+f3σ2+b3σ1=0.

This is a sharp, checkable criterion for the existence of a bounded solution of the dominating ODE on an arbitrarily long horizon. In the paper's framework that solution yields a regular decoupling field, and with it well-posedness of the linear FBSDE. In this sense the result marks the limits of solvability for general FBSDEs.

Formalization Note. "For arbitrary TTT" is a universal quantifier over T>0T>0T>0 placed outside the existential over yyy. A solution requires the integrand to be integrable on every [t,T][t,T][t,T] (see the definition file). The page's "zero point in [h,∞)[h,\infty)[h,∞)" is ∃ l≥h\exists\,l\ge h∃l≥h with F(l)=0F(l)=0F(l)=0, and similarly for (−∞,h](-\infty,h](−∞,h].

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
