Let Ω\OmegaΩ be a nonempty closed convex subset of a finite-dimensional real inner product space EEE, PPP the projection into Ω\OmegaΩ, and f:E→Rf : E \to \mathbb Rf:E→R continuously differentiable on Ω\OmegaΩ. For x∈Ωx \in \Omegax∈Ω let x(α)=P(x−α∇f(x))x(\alpha) = P(x - \alpha\nabla f(x))x(α)=P(x−α∇f(x)). Then for every α>0\alpha > 0α>0,

⟨∇f(x),x−x(α)⟩≥∥x(α)−x∥2α.\langle \nabla f(x), x - x(\alpha) \rangle \ge \frac{\|x(\alpha) - x\|^2}{\alpha}.⟨∇f(x),x−x(α)⟩≥α∥x(α)−x∥2.

In particular the step from xxx to x(α)x(\alpha)x(α) is a descent direction whenever x(α)≠xx(\alpha) \neq xx(α)=x; the estimate is used with x=xkx = x_kx=xk throughout the convergence analysis.

Formalization Note "Continuously differentiable on Ω\OmegaΩ" is fff differentiable at every point of Ω\OmegaΩ with ∇f\nabla f∇f continuous on Ω\OmegaΩ (the paper's standing assumption for §2).

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
