Let q∈Δnq\in\Delta_nq∈Δn with q(j)>0q(j)>0q(j)>0 for all jjj, let β>0\beta>0β>0 and v∈Rnv\in\mathbb R^nv∈Rn, and let σ(λ)=λlog⁡(∑jq(j)ev(j)/λ)+βλ\sigma(\lambda)=\lambda\log\big(\sum_j q(j)e^{v(j)/\lambda}\big)+\beta\lambdaσ(λ)=λlog(∑jq(j)ev(j)/λ)+βλ be the dual function (47). Then for every λ>0\lambda>0λ>0,

qTv+βλ  ≤  σ(λ)  ≤  vmax⁡+βλ,q^{\mathsf T}v+\beta\lambda \;\le\; \sigma(\lambda) \;\le\; v_{\max}+\beta\lambda,qTv+βλ≤σ(λ)≤vmax+βλ,

where vmax⁡=max⁡jv(j)v_{\max}=\max_j v(j)vmax=maxjv(j).

The two affine bounds give the starting bracket of the bisection algorithm that minimises σ\sigmaσ.

Formalization Note The paper states (48) for all λ≥0\lambda\ge 0λ≥0 with the convention σ(0)=vmax⁡\sigma(0)=v_{\max}σ(0)=vmax. At λ=0\lambda=0λ=0 both inequalities then read qTv≤vmax⁡≤vmax⁡q^{\mathsf T}v\le v_{\max}\le v_{\max}qTv≤vmax≤vmax, and the value σ(0)=vmax⁡\sigma(0)=v_{\max}σ(0)=vmax is the limit of Eq. (49) (a separate milestone). The statement here is for λ>0\lambda>0λ>0, where σ\sigmaσ is given by formula (47).

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Setting. Let n∈Nn \in \mathbb{N}n∈N, let q,v∈Rnq, v \in \mathbb{R}^nq,v∈Rn and let β∈R\beta \in \mathbb{R}β∈R. Assume:

  • qqq lies in the probability simplex: qj≥0q_j \ge 0qj≥0 and ∑jqj=1\sum_j q_j = 1∑jqj=1;
  • qj>0q_j > 0qj>0 for every jjj;
  • β>0\beta > 0β>0.

Notation.

  • The dual function is
σ(λ)=λlog⁡ ⁣(∑jqjevj/λ)+βλ.\sigma(\lambda) = \lambda \log\!\Big(\sum_j q_j e^{v_j/\lambda}\Big) + \beta\lambda .σ(λ)=λlog(j∑qjevj/λ)+βλ.

For λ>0\lambda > 0λ>0 the sum inside the logarithm is strictly positive, so this is the ordinary logarithm.

  • vmax⁡=max⁡jvjv_{\max} = \max_j v_jvmax=maxjvj, the supremum of the coordinates of vvv.

Conclusion. For every real λ>0\lambda > 0λ>0,

∑jqjvj+βλ  ≤  σ(λ)  ≤  vmax⁡+βλ.\sum_j q_j v_j + \beta\lambda \;\le\; \sigma(\lambda) \;\le\; v_{\max} + \beta\lambda .j∑qjvj+βλ≤σ(λ)≤vmax+βλ.

Both inequalities are non-strict. Nothing is asserted for λ≤0\lambda \le 0λ≤0.

Degenerate cases.

  • n=0n = 0n=0: excluded by the simplex hypothesis, so vmax⁡v_{\max}vmax is a genuine maximum.
  • n=1n = 1n=1: q=(1)q = (1)q=(1) and σ(λ)=v1+βλ\sigma(\lambda) = v_1 + \beta\lambdaσ(λ)=v1+βλ. Both inequalities are equalities.
  • vvv constant, all vj=cv_j = cvj=c: σ(λ)=c+βλ\sigma(\lambda) = c + \beta\lambdaσ(λ)=c+βλ, and again both sides are equalities.
  • λ=0\lambda = 0λ=0: the value there, which by the division convention would be 000, is not covered.
