Consider the cash-balance model with positive transfer rates cu,cdc_u,c_dcu,cd, discount 0<β<10<\beta<10<β<1, an integrable cash change ZZZ, and nonnegative convex holding cost LLL satisfying L(0)=0L(0)=0L(0)=0 and superlinear growth in both directions. Let Jn(x)J_n(x)Jn(x) be the infimum, over measurable Markov policies, of the expected nnn-period discounted cost, with J0=0J_0=0J0=0.

For every horizon nnn, the finite real-valued conversion of JnJ_nJn is convex. There are critical-level sequences Sn−,Sn+S_n^-,S_n^+Sn−,Sn+, ordered for every n≥1n\ge1n≥1, such that

Jn(x)={(Sn−−x)cu+L(Sn−)+βE[Jn−1(Sn−−Z)],x<Sn−,L(x)+βE[Jn−1(x−Z)],Sn−≤x≤Sn+,(x−Sn+)cd+L(Sn+)+βE[Jn−1(Sn+−Z)],x>Sn+.J_n(x)=\begin{cases} (S_n^- -x)c_u+L(S_n^-)+\beta\mathbb E[J_{n-1}(S_n^- -Z)],&x<S_n^-,\\ L(x)+\beta\mathbb E[J_{n-1}(x-Z)],&S_n^-\le x\le S_n^+,\\ (x-S_n^+)c_d+L(S_n^+)+\beta\mathbb E[J_{n-1}(S_n^+ -Z)],&x>S_n^+. \end{cases}Jn(x)=⎩⎨⎧(Sn−−x)cu+L(Sn−)+βE[Jn−1(Sn−−Z)],L(x)+βE[Jn−1(x−Z)],(x−Sn+)cd+L(Sn+)+βE[Jn−1(Sn+−Z)],x<Sn−,Sn−≤x≤Sn+,x>Sn+.

This is the finite-horizon threshold structure of Theorem 2.6.2. It supplies the finite-horizon input for passing jointly converging critical levels to the infinite-horizon limit. It makes no assertion about convergence of the levels or infinite-horizon optimality.

Formalization Note Costs and expectations use extended nonnegative reals; convexity is stated after conversion to real values. Horizon-zero critical levels are unconstrained.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
