Let III be a finite index set and let M∈CI×IM\in\mathbb{C}^{I\times I}M∈CI×I be a Hermitian matrix. Let UUU be the unitary matrix whose columns are the orthonormal eigenvectors of MMM chosen by the spectral theorem, and let λi∈R\lambda_i\in\mathbb{R}λi∈R be the corresponding eigenvalues, so that M=Udiag⁡(λi)U∗M=U\operatorname{diag}(\lambda_i)U^*M=Udiag(λi)U∗. Then the matrix exponential satisfies

exp⁡M=U diag⁡(eλi)i∈I U∗.\exp M=U\,\operatorname{diag}\bigl(e^{\lambda_i}\bigr)_{i\in I}\,U^* .expM=Udiag(eλi)i∈IU∗.

This explicit diagonalization of eMe^{M}eM is used to describe finite-dimensional Gibbs-type perturbations ρ∝eM\rho\propto e^{M}ρ∝eM of a state on a finite block, whose eigenvalues are eλie^{\lambda_i}eλi in the eigenbasis of MMM.

Formalization Note UUU is hM.eigenvectorUnitary and λi\lambda_iλi is hM.eigenvalues i from Mathlib's spectral theorem for Hermitian matrices; exp⁡\expexp is NormedSpace.exp in the matrix algebra.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
